G Force versus VOLTRON?

When we were kids, my siblings and I had this theory that the Voltron Guys descended from G Force. (stupid i know)

they were just so similar.

we used to say that:

Mark = Keith
Jason = Lance
Princess = Princess Allura
Keyap = Pidge
Tiny = Hulk

haha they were just so similar...

Did any one of you guys have such theories or make at least a comparison?
cheers,
BB

Yes ,the Voltron characters were definately based on the Battle of the Planets characters. This is why the writers of Voltron wrote off Sven's character. To make it a carbon copy of Battle of the Planet's cast of heroes. Sven's character did not fit the mold that Battle of the Planets had. Thus, they wanted to include Allura to match G-Force's Princess. What a shame. I though Sven was the coolest character on Voltron. He was a more natural leader than Keith in my opinion and certainly a much better pilot.

Sven is my favorite Voltron character, but he didn't leave to fit the mold of Battle of the Planets. Both shows originated in Japan years before the Americanized versions.

Incidently, in the Japanese version of Voltron, the Sven character actually died in the 6th episode and they have a funeral for him. The character who comes back as Sven later was his twin brother in the Japanese series, obsessed with killing the person who killed his brother. (BTW, there is one episode in the second season where Sven flies the Blue Lion again.)

I remember in my 7th grade science class, someone called the Voltron characters, "the old G-Force guys."

Personal reason for likeing Keith, it's my name. Heh, but Sven was totally cool! One thing I did like, was how the colors of the uniform didn't match the lions.... But, I'm just rambling.

BotP, I'm netflixing the show, so I can relive it.

Voltron was a cheap rip off of G-Force.

Gatchaman was a groundbreaking show in Japan, esentially spawning the live action "sentai/supersentai" shows (Power Rangers). This fed back into animation, like Voltron and others. Gatchaman is the granddaddy of this stuff. Voltron and other mecha shows are also influenced by Giant Robo (Johnny Sokko), Gigantor, and the Ultra shows. Gatchaman also owes a little to the Ultra shows and Kamen Rider, as well as American superheroes.

If I remember correctly, I read in a Wizard magazine that there was a Voltron/G Force comic crossover, anyone know if it ever materialized?

Hi all!

The G-Force/Voltron crossover was proposed, but when both the Voltron and the BotP comics died in the marketplace, the idea was shelved.

Sad that it never came to fruition, it would have been interesting to see how they would have pulled it off.

OMG! That's been my thought for years! In fact, BOTP got me turned on to Voltron!
BOTP even has it's own equivalent of Robeasts and Anderson could be Coran (those mustaches)!

I think when the guys in that great "Land Of The Rising Sun" were working on GoLion, they had Gatchaman in mind (of course, the 'Princess' spot in Voltron was originally held by another guy, Sven. Maybe that's why he was written out by being injured/killed).

I was like 4 when I first saw Botp in the 70's, then when Voltron came out my first thoughts was how similar it was to Botp. Botp was like my first love cartoon, Voltron also became one of my favorites. Both great shows. I haven't watched them for a while but should go back and re-watch them since I have them on DVD. Ah the good ol days lol
