DVD?

Why hasn't this seen the light of day on DVD?

With Spiderman, Spiderman 2,(and Spiderman 3 guaranteed) to be hits, I
can't believe somebody hasn't raced to get this out.

I think the Marvel Comics powers that be would prefer that this short-lived, often laughable TV series stays mostly buried. I, on the other hand, think it's interesting and historic enough to be unearthed on DVD. The pilot for the series is the 1st completely live version of a Silver Age Marvel comicbook after all. [Years earlier PBS' "Electric Company" kiddie show debuted "Spidey Super Stories", very simplistic Spider-Man skits. The action there was mostly live except for cartoon word balloons providing Spidey's speech.] Ideally, the movie-length pilot and the movie-length final episode (Summer 1979's "The Chinese Web") would be on a flipper with audio commentary from series star Nicholas Hammond, while the actual seasons would have their own DVD sets (the five eps CBS originally aired in Spring '78 = "Season One"; all six eps that managed to find a place in the '78-'79 CBS program schedule = "Season 2") with making-of-the-show/history-of-Spidey special features. Actually, all of the Spider-Man TV from the '70s & '80s (cartoons and live-action shows) should be available as DVDs. The companies that own these old programs should be cashing in on the current Spider-Man movie franchise! I wouldn't even mind bare-bones DVD releases as long as the audio/video quality is 1st rate.

"On a flipper" means...?

reply

"on a flipper" means on a DVD that can be flipped over because there is content on BOTH sides. Flippers are more commonly called two-sided DVDs. My idea for an "Amazing Spider-Man" flipper came from the 2003 "Incredible Hulk" flipper that had the movie-length pilot on one side and the movie-length season 2 premiere on the other side (Hulk show creator Ken Johnson provided audio commentary for both main features).

reply

Thanks for the info dude!! I think I'm going to go find that Hulk DVD- it definitely sounds interesting.

reply

I agree release this now!

I'll bet the decison lies with Marvel honcho Avi Arad. He's vowed that the unreleased Fantastic Four movie will never see the light of day (at least legally) and I suspect he is of the same opinon with this series, not to mention the Captain America telemovies and later theatrical (well, straight to video) movie. I loved the telemovie versions as a kid and wore out my old Beta copies!

The series can be found for sale on ioffer.com, although it is bootleg. It would be nice, and certainly profitable, for the show to be released on DVD just like everything else ever aired seems to be finding its way to DVD.

i think they should license one of those dollar dvd distributers for dollar stores to release these as single episode dvds. That way the fans get them with no money lost, and at least some money gained.

I would love to see this on DVD, if only Anchor Bay can aquire it then it would make my day.

"Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb"-Batman.

reply

It would be hard for anchor bay to release a spider-man property the costs of buying such a hot commonidy is too stagering for anchor bay plus I think columbia pictures television studio owns the property but can't release it unless the go ahead is given from avi

reply

Mr. Trans8010,
I'm pretty sure you intended to type
commodity, not commonidy.
And
staggering, not stagering.

reply

release it right now. It would sell. Even though SPM 3 was a let down.

reply

I would certainly buy something like a Best Of DVD 4 discs set, including the double feature "THE CHINESE WEB"

And to be very honest, I would much prefer to watch some of those old TV episodes over this huge CatastroF@#$ Spider-Man 3 film

Hey, I liked Spider-man 3... but that's besides the point. I wish they would release this show, it would be pure nostalgia. And with all the money desperate executives... I figure it wouldn't be a problem to release this show on DVD.

Ramones, the best band ever.

reply

No The Beatles are! There are a LOT of bands better than the Ramones.

reply

no, i want the whole collection, i'd be wondering what i was missing if it was only the best of. I loved this and wwas in awe as a kid. Especially how he crawled on the side of the building. Make believe is just that, make yourself believe, people are too lazy now a days, they want everything done for them so they have to put no effort into it. Sneering because the dark knight landed on the cab with racheal. Idiots.

Rhino released it on video sometime during the 90's--could be a matter of the videos lack of sales success, or in terms of the respective rights held by Marvel and the show's producers...

I would love to see the whole series again, I have watched my vhs tape of the two feature length episodes (films) over and over again

reply

There are actually three feature length episodes, all of which were released here in the UK at cinemas, I remember watching them as a kid at my local.

Spider Man (pilot)
Spider Man Strikes Back (deadly dust parts 1 & 2)
Spider Man And The Dragons Challenge (chinese web parts 1 & 2)

I too think this entire series should be released on DVD, along with the two Captain America films and the Doctor Strange one. Marvel can't make them go away by pretending that they don't exist, all that happens is that bootleggers make the money by selling DVD's ripped from video.

You don't happen to remember what they were showing with, do you?

I saw at least one, and I think two, at a UK cinema as well. It runs in my mind that it might have been with one of those 70s car chase films, but I can't place it, and it's bugging me.

Elsewhere someone said one was with Cactus Jack, but I didn't see that.

From memory I remember watching a Captain Nemo film?

reply

I'm guessing that would have to have been The Amazing Captain Nemo,
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077156/, but a 1981 date is given for a UK theatrical release, which seems a little late. But maybe the Spidy films were released here one a year? I don't think I saw that, but I can't see any other Captain Nemo films out around that time.

Strangely, I can remember clearly seeing at least one of the films. I can remember which cinema, time of day, even the weather(!), but not the supporting film (or rather the other film; I think Spidy was actually the support) which is the sort of trivia I usually do remember. It does fascinate me which old double bills are now forgotten, but I've never found a way of researching that, short of looking up old news papers (a slow job), or stumbling across an original poster.

I'm inclining to think it was the original Gone in 60 Seconds, or more likely, one of the Gumball Rally type films. I fact it just might have been Gumball Rally, which I did see around that time.

reply

I saw this at my local ABC cinema on a double bill with Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.

Actually that may well have been what I saw too; in fact it probably was.

Oddly, my memory still isn't quite putting them together, but I clearly remember seeing (and enjoying) Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, and that, too, was in a double bill (but then all but the biggest films were). Often I can recall the pairings so I'm not sure why I'm not quite remembering this clearly, but I'm almost certain it has to have been these two together for me as well.

Thanks!

reply

The first Spidey movie originally played as the main feature in a double-bill with You Light Up My Life and was reissued as second feature to Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger when that was reissued.
