Censorship?

I saw a PG-Rated version of Wizards on VHS a while ago and it seemed kind of chopped-up (swear words muted, etc.)

About halfway through the movie, during a battle, a monster walks past the screen with what appears to be a censorship circle covering him up. About twenty minutes later, in another battle, the same monster walks past the screen, again with the circle. *What*, exactly, is it that's being censored? Does anybody know?

The Nazi swastika maybe?

reply

Censoring a Swastika??? Good God, that seems wonderfully ironic...

reply

I don't know if it would have been a swastika, because there were tons of swastikas elsewhere in the movie- so censoring just one would have been kind of strange...

I asked the question on the Ralph Bakshi site a while ago and he himself didn't even seem to know. Maybe someone who worked on the movie knows? I have no idea what it could have been.

Q: Are you sure that was a censorship circle? If it's the scene I'm thinking about there's a creature in the battle scenes with a shield that looks funny, like it's a cut-out made of holographic material or something placed on the cell frame, but it was done on purpose and was always there...? Good luck finding the answer...

I do know there's a scene that's always bugged me where two of the gas-mask guys go into where the priests are, and one of them says, "What IS all this...?" Because the sound is so good you can just make out that he must have said, "What is all this sh--" but all you hear now is the start of the sh.

I have a feeling this movie might have been R-rated before it was cut and released to theaters.

Sometimes it's not enough merely to teach. One has to punish as well.

Yeah, it's a red monster that walks in front of the "camera" from left to right in one battle and right to left in another, I think. I just assumed it was some kind of censorship because of the other parts in the movie that seem sort of censored, like the "What is all this sh--" and when Avatar says something like "I'm getting too f---- old for this" in the beginning. I suppose if there was a script for it somewhere it would probably say what all this stuff was originally supposed to be.

Well! I bought the script off ebay a few years ago, and guess what, it's NOTHING like the movie at all...it was a very serious fantasy film, more like "Fire And Ice" or even LOTR. So I guess the mystery remains, huh?

I posted on here awhile ago about a rumor there were deleted scenes: One that I'd heard of was that when Blackwolf's bride runs to stop Weehawk from killing Elinore, she reveals that the baby in her arms is a mutant...and it's dead! There MUST be deleted scenes somewhere, that ALWAYS happens...I saw on ebay just yesterday that there was a cell for sale with a delted scene from Bakshi's "LOTR," where the Balrog was mutated into a giant snake or something.

Anyway, I don't think the current version of "Wizards" is censored from the way it always played, but I bet there's more to it...SOMEWHERE...! Ya think?

I know the scene you're talking about, and that is indeed a holographic mirror-texture, not a censoring circle. If you look carefully, you can spot other things of this texture throughout the movie; they're not very prominent, but they are present in a few scenes.

reply

Yeah, that's what I saw. I didn't see any scene (what there were of them) being censored anywhare. Thanks for clearing that up.
