Gloom

One of the reasons i like this cartoon (and many other bakshi works) is the gloomy, ominous, and macabre atmosphere. I have only seen the trailer to Fritz The Cat, but I enjoy the expressionistic feel of the backgrounds and the light color tones on the buildings.
I noticed Disney animated films of the 60's like 101 dalmations, the rescuers, and aristocrats shared a similar atmosphere with their expressionistic backgrounds and sketchy figure work. That is probably my favorite period of Disney Animation, at least visually.

If anyone knows of any similar cartoons with gloomy atmospheres could you please let me know?

Thanks!

You might try some of the dark 80's cartoons, like "The Black Cauldron", and Don Bluth's movies, like "The Land Before Time". Or heck, mayhbe even "Heavy Metal", as that's composed of many episodes each done by a different animation team.

I recommend you searching for a hungarian genius called Marcell Jankovics. He made several cartoons from traditional hungarian folk tales. His cartoons are like no other, but have a similar atmoshphere as in Bakshi's works: gloomy, macabre and so. Some titles: Fehérlófia, János Vitéz, Magyar Népmesék.

Here you can fins some about Jankovics and his work "Fehérlófia". It was nominated for the Oscar award for the best cartoon I think...
