I wish....

this movie would be remade but as a live action version. I really liked this movie but mainly for the story. When it was made back in the 70's it had a small budget, goofy voices for several characters, bad 70's style funk music, and painfully unfunny attempts at humor throughout the movie. Back then they obviously didn't have the technology to film this movie any other way than animation. Today there isn't much we can't do. So I think they should take the good elements of this movie like the dark and creative fantasy story it has and use real people. Also who better to direct such a concept than director Ridley Scott? Think about it. If he got a hold of this, it would be like Legend crossed with Bladerunner.

While you make some valid points, the whole message of the story is that too much technology robs society of magic. If this film were to be made today, it would be a big budget blockbuster loaded with pointless digital effects and a storyline devoid of character or humanity. While a few projects today succeed, the large majority are empty at the core. Bakshi's work was never meant to be state of the art, it was always underground and raw. He preferred a stripped down look with a thoughtful story, as opposed to superior technical craftsmanship. To update this film would ultimately betray the original premise that Bakshi created in the 1970s. The films of that era may seem very dated today to most people, but for many of us, they contain unique ideas and images that have never been duplicated. The criticism of the 1970s is often harsh and always in large supply, but Hollywood certainly has no problem making money off of it.

I have thought about this also.. it's a good story for a remake.. I think it would need to keep a comic element to make it palatable for the masses.. and furthermore, I could kind of see Ben Afleck and Matt Damon doing the "they killed Fritz" scene.. ;)
