I would've had Heavy Metal as #1 - it really is the pinnacle of "adult animation" even if it is dated.

And bless you for including "Twice Upon a Time"

reply

Hi, and thanks for reading!

I included Heavy Metal by default because I know it's one of the most known and loved adult cartoons, but honestly, I know I watched it, but I don't remember it much. Just that I'd found it weird. So I included it cause I know it's beloved, but I couldn't put it higher than all the other great stuff on my list! hehe

I've loved Twice Upon a Time since I first saw it as a kid! It's so weird, yet so good! hehe

Nice list though I agree that Heavy Metal should be higher on the list.

Seems insane that this list isn't 90% anime.

reply

Heh, I get that a lot. But I actually don't watch amine hardly at all. Usually if I'm watching it it's because I'm watching with my sister. She's the anime freak, not me, hehe.

Thanks for stopping by! :-)

The Maxx and Spawn: TAS should be on that list.

Why is 'Fritz The Cat' not on this list?!

Everyone has their own list. Some items missing that I think are significant:

American Pop-It's disjointed; but has a decent central storyline and some tremendous animation. It holds up a lot better than Cool World, in my opinion.

Batman the Animated Series: It is the rare production designed for kids that succeeds in giving adults what they want. The Mask of the Phantasm movie is probably the best Batman film, of all.

Akira-I have problems with many anime, as they often sag in the middle; but, not this one. It is a masterpiece all the way through.

Animal Farm-an excellent animated adaptation, from the UK.

Jonny Quest-tremendously entertaining adventure series that still holds up, for adults.

Flintstones and the Jetsons-both were created for prime time and are a bit more sophisticated than other HB offerings. The comedy holds up better, too.

Flash Gordon, the Greatest Adventure of All-this was the original tv movie version of the Filmation cartoon series. It was commissioned as a movie, first; but, so impressed NBC that they asked for a series. The first quarter of the series re-used footage from the film and was broadcast first. The movie version includes the opening of how the Earth trio get to Mongo and why Ming is attacking the planet. It's got a higher level of violence and some more sophisticated characterization.

The Iron Giant-it was made for kids; but, like the best, it has plenty of meat for the adults.

Anything from Pixar. The Incredibles is a personal favorite.

I could add others, including many Disney films. Just because a film is aimed at families or kids doesn't mean it doesn't appeal to sophisticated adults. Disney's films are classics, for a reason (well, some of them).

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

A Thousand & One Nights (Sen'ya ichiya monogatari) [1969]
- utterly amazing!

I saw "Wizards" with my dad and brother, as well as "Fire & Ice." Though if they really wanted to impress me, they'd make these into live-action movies. However, due to the way Hollyweird is behaving right now, I wouldn't hold my breath on getting a good interpretation out of this.
