Any other 70s psychedelic animation?

I have these memories of some cartoons I'd seen when I was a kid. 70s type psychedelic similar to this cartoon. I remember one about these mutant like people living on rocks and in caves laying around. But for the life of me I have no idea what these animations were. If anybody remembers any of these shows would greatly appreciate some suggestions.

Well, he made Lord of the Rings (the animated version) in '78. Could that possibly be the one you're thinking of? There's also Heavy Metal from the early 80s...I'm not sure if either one's exactly what you're thinking of though. Sorry :(

Not sure what flick the OP is after, but in a similar vein to Wizards I'd recommend movies by Rene Laloux - like Fantastic Planet, Time Masters and Gandahar - they're all up that particular alley.

reply

Fire and Ice which was drawn by the same artist as Wizards is an 80's Psychadelic like film! You aren't referring to Fraggle Rock are you?!?!

reply

Fraggle Rock? You gotta be kidding me. Ive got Fraggle Rock on dvd though.:)

reply

Heavy Traffic and Fritz the Cat are a couple that ralph baksi was involved with that rule.

reply

They are psychadelic and lay around in underground caves all the time. Only off by a few years too. Seemed a fitting suggestion/joke.

Did you ever find out what it was?

If not can you try to be more specific?

reply

How about American Pop, which unless I'm mistaken is also done by the same director, but everyone forgets about it. Very "trippy" music and animation

reply

How hasn't anyone mentioned Fantastic Planet yet?

It is my favourite animated film. it is sooo tripped. and has one of the best soundtracks known to man...psychedelic wise. I mean, at least to my tastes. I love it.
I also love the art style.

reply

That movie OP is looking for sounds like Fantastic Planet to me.

reply

Or perhaps it was the second half of the old spiderman cartoon series, also illustrated by Bakshi and very psychedelic.

Fantastic Planet and Laloux's movies are awesome

"Killer Klowns from Outer Space? Holy S***"

Bruno Bozzetto's Allegro Non Troppo is another 1970s animation with some pretty far out bits in it. There's a few chunks of it on Youtube. It was shown on British TV in the late 70s - I was probably 7 or 8, and has stuck with me since.

This one is is from 1968, but definitely psychedelic: The Yellow Submarine

reply

Surely Heavy Metal (1981) is the ne plus ultra of this genre.

Point them with the sticky end.

reply

Yellow Submarine is very trippy! Make sure to prepare ;)

I know I'm rather late to the discussion!

Bakshi's Wizards reminded me of A Thousand & One Nights (Sen'ya ichiya monogatari) [1969]
An amazing film!
