Is the 8/28/07 release the uncut film, or a recycled VHS version with most of the sex scenes cut, or cut out entirely? The info says the DVD is unrated, but so was the censored VHS edition.

Well, it does mention 'fully restored', so I guess it will be the uncut version. Besides, I don't think Severin would put so much effort into the release of a cut version (there are a couple of nice featurettes included on the disc, in addition to the remastering, proper aspect ratio, etc).

George Stevens: "Give it more awe, John."
John Wayne: "Aw, truly he wuz the Son of God."

Thanks, you're probably right. Great Stevens/Wayne quote, BTW.

The Region 0 (NTSC) DVD released by Severin Films in August 2007 is completely uncut.

The "Vanessa" DVD is indeed uncut, and it remains one of the genuinely sexiest (if, in terms of plot, exceedingly stupid) films of its or any day. Olivia Pascal was beautiful -- hard to believe she's 50 this year! But I was half expecting the DVD would be in the original German, subtitled, or at least have both the original and the English-dubbed editions, instead of just the straightforward dubbed-in-English version. Not complaining, but it would've been interesting to hear the girls' real voices -- moans included. (And see how the German dialogue differed anywhere from the English).

In the 1980's American Cable Networks Cinemax and Showtime would air the same Euro-sex movies, but two DIFFERENTLY EDITED versions. The Cinemax versions were the big-screen grindhouse versions, but Showtime versions were the European TELEVISION re-edits of these films. European TV broadcast censors in the early 1980's were quite permissive when it came to nudity, but not sexual touching. The mutilated Showtime versions were the ones released on VHS in the US in the 1990's.

I first saw VANESSA on cable in 1982, and it was the complete, uncut version (dubbed). It was broadcast on a cable channel called Escapade, which subsequently disappeared when the Playboy Channel came on a year or two later, but which showed a lot of sexy (and often violent) 1970s European exploitation films, all in their uncut glory. The one or two occasions I ever ran across VANESSA in later years it was the edited version, with all the sex scenes edited or deleted outright. You're also correct about the 1990s VHS. Thank God for our permissive DVD culture!
