A rich american guy is conned by a not so rich Irish/russian/american(peter ustinov) into setting up a horse stud farm.. However fred Astaire and Phillipe Noiret are wise to his plan. However the film is bathed in music and 'The Craic'as we say in Ireland and is a masterpiece of filming which will never be repeated, Also Charlotte Rampling thinks She gets pregnent (behind this curtain of rain) by Monsieur Noiret. When the planned pregnancy does not develop the Princess (Frau Rampling) and Mr Ustinov both lose the cool. But for different reasons and Mr Ustrinov burns down his house, A happy ending with Fred and Eddy Albert driving off the dock in the Purple Taxi,, What a way to go..

The Irish traditional group the Chieftains did nearly all the music on this film which is haunting and brilliant!!!

The Chieftains weren't the only band in the film. The Blanchardstown Brass Band performed on the pier in the final scene playing an old Irish folk song called "The Foggy Dew". They have a recording of it on their website. http://www.blanchardstownbrassband.com/index.php/media-gallery/audio-video-gallery/

The castle scenes where Philippe resides are set in a small Connemara peninsula called Renvyle.

As the doctor says at the end, 'Ireland is a place where people come to die.' All those present are running away from their lives, but painfully realise they cannot.
