A Lost Gem Returns!

This film is now being shown on Encore. I had never heard of this movie before, but it is a remarkable film with Genevieve Bujold & James Caan at their engaging best.

Lelouch blends a story of two people, each with a child, who have been widowed by violent crimes in the hardscrabble West of the 1870s, with a surprisingly large production with cattle drives, railroads, crowds portrayed by hundreds of extras, a race featuring wagons, horses and runners on foot.

But it is the director's overall style that makes this such an interesting movie--underplayed, naturalistic, and very much set in its time and place.

As far as I can tell this is NOT available on DVD, but hopefully MGM can rectify that soon.

I tried to watch this thing when it first came out. I walked out on it. I noticed it was on tv the other night so I dicided to give another man another chance another chance ha. After 32 years Perhaps my maturity level and intellect has improved and I will understand what this movie is all about. No, I was right the first time. This is the worst movie I have ever seen. Dull, boring, scenes don't go anywhere. Even the sound quality is so poor they had to put captions here and there so you could try and figure out what was going on. I'm not going to waste my time with this. The movie was very poorly done and it SUCKED. and now you know, the rest of the story.

They just now showed it on TCM... as part of their Summer Under The Stars day dedicated to James Caan.
I've always enjoyed Mr. Caan's movies but had never heard of this one... however it might now be a favorite. The way it was filmed and the way the story was told... soooo very NOT-Hollywood way of approaching the subject... no formula, no predictable nonsense... yet things happen in such a believable way, at a believable pace.
Perfect for Mr. Caan's style of performance which has always appealed to me for how subtle and intimate he can be.
