Oscar Shut-Out
This is one of two films (The Color Purple being the other) to be nominated for 11 academy awards and lose all 11 of them.

shareI think going in it was the frontrunner, after it's Golden Globe wins, and to snag eleven nods, including a nomination even for Lesley Browne's dreadful performance, it must have had a lot of support. With the benefit of history Annie Hall and Star Wars were probably ahead of the pack (although Julia is a very good film too). I think the Academy made the right choice that year, which they don't do all that often.
share1977 was a very strong year for films, and particularly for women's roles in films. Today, you have to struggle to find 5 worthy nominees, in the late70s/early 80s, (and '77 in particular), it was a challenge to NARROW IT DOWN to 5 nominees.
In another year, Turning Point may have won some awards, but the competition was just too strong. Most would agree that Julia and of course Annie Hall were better films.
I agree with the previous poster that this is one of the few years that the Academy made the right decision. I wish I had been alive to watch this ceremony, with films and actors that I admired.
Ill have to make a trip to the Paley Center one of these days.
BECKET also lost 11 Oscars, but it won Adapted Screenplay.
