Oscar Shut-Out

This is one of two films (The Color Purple being the other) to be nominated for 11 academy awards and lose all 11 of them.

I think going in it was the frontrunner, after it's Golden Globe wins, and to snag eleven nods, including a nomination even for Lesley Browne's dreadful performance, it must have had a lot of support. With the benefit of history Annie Hall and Star Wars were probably ahead of the pack (although Julia is a very good film too). I think the Academy made the right choice that year, which they don't do all that often.

1977 was a very strong year for films, and particularly for women's roles in films. Today, you have to struggle to find 5 worthy nominees, in the late70s/early 80s, (and '77 in particular), it was a challenge to NARROW IT DOWN to 5 nominees.

In another year, Turning Point may have won some awards, but the competition was just too strong. Most would agree that Julia and of course Annie Hall were better films.

I agree with the previous poster that this is one of the few years that the Academy made the right decision. I wish I had been alive to watch this ceremony, with films and actors that I admired.

Ill have to make a trip to the Paley Center one of these days.

BECKET also lost 11 Oscars, but it won Adapted Screenplay.
