I hated this movie
Misogynist crap tarted up to look like "art" by making the characters ballerinas. REPULSIVE.

Ok maybe the acting was bad but it had great dancing and the music was good. I go to the joffery ballet school in chicago so mabye my perspective is different but you and your friend are just trying to sound sophisticated by insulting the movie. It was pretty *beep* good bitches especially baryshnikov.

If you have never danced, you would never understand.
shareFunny how these people that hate this movie take all the time to watch it, spend even more time looking it up on here, then writing a review on it, HYSTERICAL!
Personally, when I hate something this much I move on to something more enjoyable in life.

AMEN! Even if you're not into ballet, you have to admit that as a dancer, it stops your heart. It's one of my favorites! Hell, if you don't like anything about it, at least enjoy the fact that Baryshnikov looks damn good in those tights!
shareIf you have never danced, you would never understand.
THANK YOU!!! If the Fine Arts have never been a part of your life in any way, whether it be dance, music, theater, whatever, there is no way you can possible appreciate this movie.
The Turning Point is painfully slow.Quite boring.Only someone into ballerinas,or a fan of McClane or Bancroft could enjoy it
shareI saw it in the theatre when I was a teenager and thought it was wonderful. I remember being especially impressed with Anne Bancroft and how beautiful-looking (and talented) Mikhail Baryshnikov was.
shareYOu are entitled to your opinion but please stop stating it like it's fact.
shareat least spell her name correctly, u dumb *beep*
shareI grew up listening to classical music-ballet, symphonies, and just plain piano music especially in the summer time.
And I have seen a real ballet.
I adore this movie. I hav e a tape and still watch it and recommend it.
The music, dancing, all beautiful.
Yes, it's so fake, corny, and badly acted it's pretty near unwatchable. But the beauty of the DVD is that you can quickly scan through and just watch the dance bits, which are brilliant. To me, as a balletomane and ex-dancer, this makes it worth owning. If only they'd release a disk of all the dancing that was filmed but didn't make it into the movie.
shareI would concur that dance fans can appreciate the dance featured in this film even if they don't like anything else about it.
shareHello,
I am an ex dancer, now doing research for my PhD. My semester's paper is about the movie The turning Point and I am looking for people interested in discussing the movie. Likes, dislikes, who one could identify whith and why,is this theme still actual nowadays (career or family) etc. I have not seen the movie since it was released and just ordered it to analyse it, 30 years later. I am looking forward to it!
Would you be available for some comments?
Anyone else interested?
Regards,
Michele
Michelle,
If you're serious about your PhD, I don't think you can have a serious discussion on the imdb boards. Here you will probably find loud remarks, without the proper arguments to support them. People either "adore" the movie or think it's "boring and slow", and others simply hate it. None of them will embark on a deep analysis of the film...
Every creature on this earth dies alone.
Thanks for your comment.
Of course I don't expect in depth reflexions but you'd be surprised to read what some people wrote.
But feel free to share your thoughts about the movie!I'd be more than happy to read what you think, it is certainly not all black or white?
Best regards,
Michele
P.S: This is not my only way of collecting data, it is a complement to the research.
michelle,
did you get your doctorate?
I have to laugh when I see comments like "the movie was too slow, I fast forward through all the boring parts..."
Of course, by slow moving, you mean: character rather than plot driven, introspective, subtle, and targeted to adults (as most movies were back then, and why the 70s is often considered the last great decade of filmmaking) rather than to the attention spans of 13 year olds who have to fast forward thru dialogue until they get to the "action sequences?"
Well, if that's the case, then call me a fan of "slow moving films!"
celery,
I like dramas, but I must concede that I disliked the movie.
I liked the drama behind it, but near the end, there were just one too many ballet scenes.
I know that's ironic to complain about since it is a movie about ballet, dreams, and unfulfilled dreams, but I just liked the subplot better, which was how Ann and Shirley were on opposing sides re: the ballet.
Ann felt happy with her decision to become a ballerina, yet Shirley seemed conflicted, angry, resentful, and of course envious of Emma.
On every board for every movie, there's always somebody who "hated" the film. Some are trolls, who are just trying to get under people's skin. Others are people giving honest opinions who simply don't like the type of film it is, (then why did they watch it: you can surely find out what a film is like before deciding to see it). It's a little more impressive if the critic can cite specifically what he didn't like and what he expected from the film.
But I've never seen an IMDB board where somebody didn't "hate it".
Shocking that it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards for the year 1977;it must have been an awful year. It's just a 40s style woman's picture about the choice between career and family as represented by the 2 main characters and thoroughly unmemorable except for the climactic altercation in a parking garage, if I recall, between the 2 leads.
shareJust like those 40's style men's pictures about multiple altercations and thoroughly unmemorable except for the occasional dramatic dialog. I know. Dialog is highly overrated.
