Why does Leslie Browne get sh!t for her Oscar nomination?

But Mikhail Baryshnikov gets a free pass?

A lot of the comments here have been about Browne's undeserved win. Well, what about Baryshnikov? His nomination is equally undeserved, too. Perhaps even more so. He really didn't do anything in the film besides dance -- I was waiting for him to have his big Oscar moment, but it never came -- and when he did have some dialog, his delivery was very amateurish. At least Browne had several scenes in which her character was given some depth (i.e. the confrontation with her mom), and the part where she got drunk with those out-of-towners in the bar and the scene immediately after during the performance was very good. But except for one or two interactions here and there, we didn't get to know Yuri. The character was borderline cameo. I was more impressed by the kid who played the brother Ethan. Now, he did a lot with what little screen time he had. That part where he did the faceplant in class was very believable. I cringed in pain for him.

I'm guessing the majority of posters here are female and are simply giving Baryshnikov a free pass because of his great physique and good looks.

It was a very short performance, as you say, and I think that's why his limitations get ignored. Browne has much more screentime so her crap acting capabilities are more obvious. I liked her drunk scenes but everything else was awful and the confrontation scene you mention was horribly, horribly done. Shirley MacLaine must have laughed all night after shooting that with her.

1977 was a pretty quiet year film-wise, at least in Hollywood. I don't think either should have been nominated, but then seeing film used as a vehicle to showcase these undeniable talents is a rare privilege.

I don't give either one a pass. I think they were both horrid nominations, based solely on their dancing - and certainly not acting - abilities.

Worst acting of all time!!! She can only dance NOT act! Wow who cast her?

reply

I don't know who cast her-- probably the director-- since the movie is a fictionalized version of Browne's life.

I agree, neither of them deserved to be nominated. Their dancing is splendid, but the Academy gives out awards for acting, not dancing. I thought Leslie was the worse actor of the two, however.
