Hurt Animals?

I heard that they really did hurt a lot of animals making this film. No special effects. Is that true?

Yep, they killed lots of sharks and barracudas and one turtle:"(

One really cute stingray as well... so sad. It seems its identical to the stingray steve is seen riding earlier in the movie. it happens near the end.

They used stock footage from fishing documentaries, so, yes, the animals killed where actually killed, but (mostly) not especifically for this movie. Back in the 70's the turtles were not a protected species here in méxico, so turtle meat and eggs where somewhat common in restaurants.
