What was the deal with the elderly woman at the beginning?

And those children. At the beginning, the children are exciting about getting out of school but the KGB armed agents are outside. The children all stopped talking as they saw the armed agents. What, were children not allowed to express joys of leaving school and going home? Why would armed agents be outside a school anyway?

Also, when the agents broke into the apartment to find the agent who double crossed them, what was the deal with the woman. Did she not know they were police officers or were police offiers in Soviet Russia notorious for breaking into houses at the spur of the moment and attacking people. She was expecting to be raped so it seems.

She was Nicolai Dalchimsky's mother. And the reason she was upset was because she knew the KGB men had come searching for her son, who had just left before they arrived.

It also wasn't a school. It was the apartment building where Dalchimsky lived with his mother. The kids were leaving for school, not from it. They quit talking because they came outside like it was a usual day and were shocked to see men with guns.

Hope that answers your questions.

"She was Nicolai Dalchimsky's mother"

I always wondered, why they didn't use the situation to their advantage, like: "Hey, Nicolai! We have your mother, so give yourself up, or else she gets it!"

Someone said she expected to be raped - I don't think even elderly women ar stupid enough not to know their sexual market value - which is pretty much zero (as much as an average man's).

The women who get raped, are statistically speaking young, attractive, fertile, etc. Rape is about sex, not about power.

Considering the lengths he was willing to go to in order to kickstart World War III, I doubt he cared much about his mom. He's kind of a jerk like that.
