In the beginning Vader tells some officer, “Send a distress signal and then inform the senate that all aboard were killed.” The thing is not everybody on board the rebel cruiser was killed. They show some rebel prisoners before this. The beautiful Princess Leia is still very much alive. What gives!?

The answer is simple and definitely not a plot hole. It was meant as a deception. The message was sent so no one comes looking for them.
