opening shot ripped off from 2001 space odyssey

in 2001, after title "jupiter mission", spaceship comes into from from upper left, keeps going, going, going, cant believe how long it is, once whole ship is in frame, cuts to shot viewing from opposite perspective

star wars: same thing with massive spaceship slowly entering from upper right, then cuts to show from reverse perspective

That could've been intended as a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

copying something in its entirety = not exactly a reference

But they didn't copy it in its entirety. There weren't any laser beams and explosions in 2001 and the music was entirely different. The whole scene played completely differently. If Star Wars consciously copied 2001 (and I assume they did) then it was an homage and not a ripoff -- something that happens in movies all the time.

and importantly in 2001 the space ship was silent, which it would be in a vacuum.

I saw Star Wars a couple days after it opened. I never once thought it was a rip off of 2001.

The influence of "2001" on "Star Wars" can hardly be denied, particularly in terms of aesthetics, visuality and artistic design. I can only recommend to everybody to watch both movies in succession and the similarities will become so much apparent.

I think however that "copying" or "ripping off" is not the proper word. "inspiring" or "influencing " is more like it. It´s about taking some elements from an artistic creation to assemble them into another creation that ends up being something completely different. The proof of it is that the differences between both movies pop immediately to the eye while the similarities require some attention.
