There's a reporter named Vader in Pink Flamingos (1972)
I don't think it's just coincidence.
shareCould Vader being Dutch for father mean anything? I've never seen Pink Flamingos.

So George Lucas could have known of someone with the surname Vader and consciously or subconsciously used it as part of Darth Vader's name. Someone in one of the links below says Lucas went to high school with a Gary Vader - who might not be entirely pleased with the fictional fame of his name.
Or he might have seen Pink Flamingos and consciously or subconsciously used Vader as part of Darth Vader's name.
Vader is a very simple and easy to pronounce name. It is only five letters long and alternates consonants and vowels. Thus it would be very easy for someone to make up a fictional word or name Vader.

Some people think Vader is short for invader. So I always thought it would be cool if Darth Vader command a fleet or something who called themselves "Vader's 'vaders".
Here's the truth. Darth Vader is Dutch for "Dark Father." That's it.

Only if his name is pronounced "Vodder" which it isn't, and "Darth" means nothing. I don't know why people keep rehashing this myth. It's just a lucky coincidence, nothing more....
