What was so bad about living under the First Galactic Empire?

The galaxy in Star Wars looks like a prosperous, fun, free wheeling place. What was so bad about the Empire?

reply

I'm sure it was a fine place to live, as long as you didn't go around expressing anti-imperial or pro-democracy sentiments, or wish for participation in government, or object to anything the local authorities did or didn't di, or belong to a species or nationality not in favor, or have skills the empire wanted.

If you did, one misstep would undoubtedly land you in deep doo without a trial, or conscripted to do something unpleasant.

Yeah, I think life was fine so long as you didn't get noticed. Bespin was a good example of what happens when the Empire starts to pay attention to you. Alderaan was obviously the extreme example.

What was so bad about living in Nazi Germany? North Korea? Soviet Union? You get the idea. Sure the galaxy under the Empire doesn't look so bad at first, but I'm sure certain freedoms were restricted.

We had a lot of empires in history and were all of that bad to live under for most people ?
You still have the planetary governments. When the Empire came to power how much did things change for the planetary governments and the average person?

reply

Not good if you lived on Alderan.
