My Advice to Anyone That Has Not Seen Any of These: Start with 4, 5 and 6

Before recently, I had never seen any other Star Wars movies other than the original three.

I would strongly suggest one watch the original three first because if you start at the "new" ones, the impact of what goes on in 4,5 and 6 won't be as resonating.

I know it sounds weird, but if you watch them in the "new" order, the later big surprises won't be big surprises....

I could see anyone born after 1995 not starting with 4,5,6.

reply

I think it would be weird going from CGI drenched films with really poor acting and story lines to old school films with models and interesting actors. Not to mention the naturally older looking film quality itself.

reply

My advice is to watch 4, 5 and 6 and then STOP.

Do not watch anything else and you'll be all good.

reply

To be brutally honest, they can pretty much stop after 4. Hell, they can even turn it off after Obi Wan's demise and not really miss anything of any real value.

reply

What?? Empire Strikes Back is the best!

reply

If you didn't like 5, then I am at a loss as to what you found good about 4.

reply

Alec Guinness.

reply

Seriously?
He was in 5, too, you know - if he's that important to you. But he wasn't any more special in any of his Star Wars appearances than anybody else. He did his best with what he got, but this wasn't exactly Shakespeare - there's no room for anyone to shine as a thespian, here. Mark Hamill had better acting moments than Alec Guinness, because Mark was given an actual character arc, and some actual drama to his character.
Oh, and 5 also has Yoda.

reply

Yoda has zero appeal for me. You're mistaking me for a star wars fan.

Sorry if my liking what I like burns your ass.

reply

If you're not a Star Wars fan, why on earth do you like A New Hope? And don't say "Alec Guinness". Even if you were an Alec Guinness groupie, even now that he's dead, that would not be sufficient reason to like ANH. Liking a movie just because an actor you like happens to be in it is not actually liking the movie - it's a fanatical obsession with the actor.

reply

There's plenty of reasons but since you're going to go on all kinds of wild tangents I'm not really caring if you know them. Get over yourself. You're not the gatekeeper of who gets to like what they want to like. Seriously.

And if you read my original reply you'll see I'm really not that much of a ANH fan either. I think the just of what I was saying has completely gone over your head.

What tangents?

I'm not really caring if you know them. Get over yourself. You're not the gatekeeper of who gets to like what they want to like. Seriously.

And yet it was you who felt it necessary to tell people not to bother with any of the films other than the first one.

And if you read my original reply you'll see I'm really not that much of a ANH fan either. I think the just of what I was saying has completely gone over your head.

On the contrary, this only weakens your position. Because if you're not even a fan of ANH, why are you even here at all, commenting on which of the SW trilogies to watch first?

reply

Yes, it went completely over your head. Have a nice day. LOL.

reply

You would come out of this a lot better if you had not replied at all, rather than with a comeback like that.

reply

Completely. Over. Your. Head.

reply

You keep repeating that as if you've got nothing. Which makes me suspect you've got nothing.

reply

"Because if you're not even a fan of ANH, why are you even here at all, commenting on which of the SW trilogies to watch first?"

Read your own comment slowly. Maybe read it again. Then answer your own question, skippy. If you can't then you're still not getting it. Again, completely over your head.

This is becoming as amusing as watching a dog chase its own tail.

reply

"stop after 4" You are very correct

reply

Now, you are talking

reply

Standing ovation, sir. There's too much to do in this world to waste time on Sandboy Goes Emo.

reply

Speaking as an old school SW fan I would disagree. I don't think the prequels are any good nor do I like the Disney films. The original 3 films are the only ones worth watching.

reply

I think the best viewing order for someone who hasn't seen them is 4,5,1,2,3,6.

reply

That way of viewing is named "The Ridiculous 6"

The best advice is to watch the fantastic 3. 1, 2 and 3.

Star Wars, Empire, Jedi. Done. Maybe Force Awakens where Rey hands Luke the lightsaber at the end, which is epic.

reply

The Force Awakens had promise, didn't it? It played it too safe, but set up some greatness with that lightsabre passoff and Hamill delivering the best thirty-second performance of all time.

reply

I agree that one should watch the first ones first, and if possible, watch the original theatrical versions. The prequels can be skipped altogether, and one can jump right into the new trilogy. Maybe watch Solo in between the two, as it's a surprisingly great film-- it was written by Lawrence Kasdan, who also wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Last Ark-- but that's more of a "watch for fun" than necessary to the story. I'd skip Rogue One... like the prequels it offers nothing new, and kind of plods along, focused only on getting from a previously known Point A to an equally unsurprising and already determined Point B, without much drama in between.

reply

Sound advice.

reply

Watch them in the order they were made. Simple.

reply

"I know it sounds weird, but if you watch them in the "new" order, the later big surprises won't be big surprises...."

No, it doesn't sound weird at all. The production order is the only way to go, altough Lucas did his best in destroying character buildup and introduction in his special edition versions of the original three. I don't understand the need of the changes he made. Either his audience got dumber during the 80's and 90's or he got senile.

reply

I wonder if he did that to ensure new viewers would watch them all and to encourage those that had seen the originals to see the new "content"...

I know while re-watching Empire that I did not recall Jabba The Hut being in it originally and then had to read the boards to find out that it was added content.
