Never loved this film. I saw it when it first came out and just watched it again and unfortunately I think with all the tinkering it's actually got a little worse.
I like the 3 leads but the clumsy dialogue and posey direction does them no favours. To be honest the only comfortable performance's are Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing and I'm guessing that's because with thier reputations they were allowed to do it thier own way.
Ah well, to each his, or her, own I guess.

Your guess is right.

For me, part of the attraction to this film is the charm and charisma displayed by the younger, relatively unknown stars. Everything going on around them and the scope of everything more than makes up for any directing or dialogue problems.

What is posey direction?

I meant it in the sense that the actors were to told pause, hold a dramatic stance and declaim the line.
