Is Darth Vader intelligent, or stupid?

Sure, he's powerful and menacing and unstoppable, but are there any brains under the mask?

I say NOT!

I think he's a dolt. He never understood any of the Jedi wisdom, in spite of spending years studying it. Palpatine played him for a chump, and it took him twenty-odd years to realize it. It also took him almost that long who that kid his step-relatives had adopted was, and that his old adversary was near the kid. And he never found Yoda, either. And he never seemed to have any sort of responsible job, as far as I can tell his role in the Imperial army was that of Palpatine's personal goon. I think he was a bit dim, and Palpatine couldn't trust him with any real authority.

The original Darth Vader before the prequels and EU beefed him up was a total clown.

reply

True.
A bitch in a costume, betraying his mentor for his weak ass bitch of a son.

He was corrupted by hate. fear and anger. Those feelings made the Force cloud is cognitive abilities.

You know, that argument might have more force if the Anakin we saw in the prequels had ever shown any sign of intelligence.

He was corrupted by his love for Padmé and was being totally manipulated by Palpatine. Also, he felt betrayed by his best friend and mentor, Basically, he's a bit of an emotional kid and therefor easily corrupted by The Dark Side of The Force.

One might even say that it's a bit of a family trait.

He wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. However as a child he seemed way ahead of his time. He recognized Qui-Gon as a Jedi, he built droids and was a great mechanic. He was also a great pod racer and pilot.

By the time we get to Episode 2 he comes across as a whiny immature brat. He wasn't very wise either, like in the fight with Dooku he just charges him like a bull while ignoring Obi-Wan's suggestion to fight together.

Episode 3 he seems to have become a bit more wise. The 2nd fight with Dooku proves that much. Ultimately though Palpatine plays him for a fool. He disobeyed Master Windu's order to wait while Windu confronted Palpatine, then he betrays Windu and gets him killed. Later in his fight with Obi -wan he gets too cocky and tells obi-wan to not underestimate his power before getting his legs chopped off and burned almost to death.

As Darth Vader he seemed wiser and more calculated then before. In the book he finally realized he was played for a fool and hated the emperor for it, but he wasn't fool enough to try and take out the emperor right away, he was waiting for the right opportunity to present itself no matter how long it took. It is hard to believe Vader never followed up with his step relatives on Tatooine. If he was smart enough to do so it would have led to an encounter with Obi-wan. VAder not finding Yoda is pretty believable. Nobody knew where Yoda went, he just disappeared. I don't think Vader really cared about Yoda either, Obi-wan was the focus of his attention. Vader was Obsessed with getting revenge on Obi-wan
