Why was the Tantive IV over Tatooine?

I've always wondered this. In the opening crawl it specifically says Leia was "racing home" (not going to find Obi-Wan as the radio drama depicts) so why exactly was she over Tatooine. If they were on there way to Alderaan or Yavin and dropped out of hyperspace early because they were being followed how did the Devastator know? I just can't seem to put this chain of events in my mind. Any help? Thanks.

She was racing home but with a quick stop off to pick up Kenobi....

There's something wonderful about a storm.

Seems kinda convoluted. The plans are so important, wouldn't you think they go back and get Kenobi. I always saw it as they were racing home and for some reason had to drop out of hyperspace and that it was a complete coincidence that they were at Tatooine, and then Leia knew Obi-Wan was on Tatooine so she used that as a plan B. It will be interesting to see how they approach this in the new canon (perhaps in Rogue One.)

Seeing as how Leia was going to give him a request from her father in person and she says bringing Obi-Wan to Alderaan was part of her mission I think we can safely assume she was going to Tatooine on purpose

My theory on how this will play out in Rogue One:

The Rebel spys who stole the Death Star plans were about to be captured or killed, so they desperatly sought another Alliance ship they could transmit the plans to. The Tantive IV was the closest one and Leia agreed to take them even though she was on a mission to recruit Obi-Wan. So they came out of light speed further from Tatooine than they normally would have, and by the time the transmission was complete, the Star Destroyer had caught up to them.

Obviously she was there to rendezvous with the Bothan spies with the DS plans. When they expected they'd be captured, the spies transmitted the plans to the Tantive. ("several transmissions were beamed to the ship")
I don't know why the Tantive didn't get away quicker, but they were captured too.

Doubt they used Bothan spies, probably will be the main character from Rouge One

They were going to land at Anchorhead or even Kenobi's hut. In the book, it says the vertical stabilizer, to which there was none, was too damaged to enter the atmosphere.

Better yet, why was Vader in a lowly Star Destroyer?

Every person that served can be called a veteran, but not every veteran can be called a Marine.

The Executor was probably still being built, in the shipyards. I seem to recall that it was a plot element in the Star Wars newspaper strip, under Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson.

As for Leia, another possibility is that they got the transmissions from a bearby system, encountered the Empire, went on the run and Bail organa had told her if she was in trouble, to seek out Ben Kenobi, on Tatooine. Based on where Star wars began, that is likely. Afterwards, you had so many retcons (with Rogue One about to add to the mix), you can come up with all kinds of possibilities.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

in both the film and the novel it was confirmed that leia wanted to bring obi wan with her but was intercepted the iconic star destroyer...in the sequels it was revealed that it was part of the plan to wait for luke when he was ready to train him as a jedi...and in the prequels all 3(bail, yoda. and obi wan) all agreed to meet up when the time was right to train both children but leia *beep* up the plan

For convenience of plot.
