DVD release

I would like to see this underrated classic getting a DVD release. I remember watching this on Channel 5 five years ago. It's a great film with an awesome soundtrack.

grrrrr don't you just love the music and the main theme? which plays quite often during the movie....i'm desperate for that theme on some kind of release...or if it was on dvd a good audio rip/recording would be possible

this movie is definately underrated...has such a classic 70s british/london crime thriller feel to it..if u know wha i mean

maybe someone knows if the squeeze theme has been released on some compilation album?? it's david hentschell who composed the score for educating rita...surely there's some way of getting hold of it :(

I just tracked this thread down through Google....I have to agree that this is a great slice of seedy seventies crime thriller...the music is very atmospheric and, sadly, seems to be unavailable.
David Hentschell (if its the same guy) was the producer on several Genesis albums....there is also a shot of the sun rising over London which is accompanied by music from Olias of Sunhillow by Jon Anderson of Yes...a great album if you get to hear it.

nice to see someone else feels the same way about this movie and the music :)

Yup that's the same David Hentschell....and I got the Olias of Sunhillow album...for that song..havn't listened to all of it as yet but i'll give it another listen now that you've said it's great hehe

I'll always be on the look out for that main theme...and of course if this movie ever gets released on dvd then the music could can be recorded/ripped from it...

It could be on some compilation somewhere...some cult movie oompilation or british crime/gangster movies compilation or something like that...

So yeah if I ever get hold of David Hentschell's music from The Squeeze i'll let people interested know on here :)

i agree with you.. its a great theme tune.. have you heard the opening theme music to the film 'sweeney 2'?, its written by tony hatch and is equally genius

Yes, I too watched this film back in 1999 late at night on channel 5, and made a mental note to record it next time it was shown. Fortunatly it was, and I have a copy (complete with advert breaks!!). Yes, that music is great, and I too wish I had a copy on CD or something... cant see why it should not have a DVD release as there are soooo many diabolical, rubbish films on DVD nowadays way inferior to the squeeze, and cant see why this film has not appeared on DVD as yet.

I've loved this wonderfully gritty '70's Brit gangster film ever since I saw it in the early 80's on tv - never even having heard of it . I was immediatley struck by how superior it was to Long Good Friday - the Gangsters are superbly nasty & real - despite being played by name actors like Hemmings & Boyd - guess that's good acting for you !
One reason is undoubtedly that Leon Griffiths did the script ( who created Minder ) & was top of the shop in portraying the London underworld.

There are some really memorable bits :
the whole 70's location work of dear ole "Lunnon Tarn" is great ( its just my age I think )although it does look just a bit dated compared to when I first saw it.

Freddy Starr's shopping expedition

seeing the "boys" getting "tooled-up" for the job

the rising ariel shot of Notting Hill as they search for the villains van

I don't think you can convincingly put it above Get Carter. OK Caine makes a dodgy Geordie but then Keach as a Londoner is pushing it a bit.

Another fine film that Warner Bros has yet to release on DVD; just like Prince of the City, O Lucky Man!, Straight Time, Twice Upon a Time, Agatha....

I reckon Optimum will release this one day in the UK. After all, they did the same with the Sweeney movies and Villain.

I wish I had been lucky enough to see 'The Squeeze' on television as I saw it at the cinema when it was released. The Brits have made some gritty gangster films full of violence and nastiness and 'The Squeeze' I remember as being unrelenting in its portrayal of greed in the Stephen Boyd/ David Hemmings characters and the gradual redemption of the Stacy Keach ex-Superintendent character with the great assistance of Freddie Starr who, surprisingly, did not make more films. The late Carol White is also well showcased as the vulnerable subject of a kidnap along with her daughter which puts the disturbing element into what is already a very heady mix. Edward Fox,playing the role of the ransom payer has the difficult job of presenting a rather unsympathetic character as he is the replacement in Carol White's affections after her ex-hubby,the Superintendent, who has drunk himself to the depths. All the characters are realistically flawed but director Michael Apted and writer Leon Griffiths ensure that the tension is cranked upuntil the terrific climax. This is what I can remember from a film I saw thirty-odd years ago - its impact was so great. I agree it is an underrated classic and it should have come out on DVD a long time ago.

Would like to see this one. Anything with Stacy Keach makes it worthwhile.
