There still were two nuclear explosions and two SLBM launches

So in effect, neither Russia nor the West reacted when the two subs launches SLBMs that eventually nuked each other--possibly in the Med?

Wow.

reply

The two hijacked nuclear-armed subs posed a major threat. Nuking each other solves the problem. Russia and the US were working together and in communication, so no reaction needed, except to clean up the nuclear mess afterward, if possible.

Was it implied in the story Russia and the US were working together? In any case, there still would be fallout.

reply

Yes.
And, IMO, fallout over the ocean is preferable to two missing rogue, nuke-armed subs.
