Bond will return in for your eyes only?

This is what it says at the very end of the movie, but Moonraker is the movie that Bond returns in then it comes too for your eyes only

Does anyone know why this happened?

reply

I remember that being discussed in the DVD commentary.

I haven't gotten the DVD im afraid.

Because of this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/?ref_=nv_sr_2

More specifically, after the success of Star Wars, they wanted to cash in on the sci-fi craze, so they instead did a more science-fiction-esque bond before going back to doing For Your Eyes Only.

Figured as much. And just 2 years after Jaws they did The Spy who loved me..

reply

Then you had "Live And Let Die" cashing in on Blaxploitation, and "The Man With The Golden Gun" on Kung Fu movies.

Not just the Moore era though, Bond has always sort of stayed with the times. More recently you had "Quantum Of Solace", which I really enjoy, but some people consider a Bourne knock-off. "License To Kill" joined the endless ranks of late 80's/early 90's South American drug cartel movies, after even Crocodile Dundee had already conquered the subject matter. And they're always a mirror of pop culture and style of the time, to the point there's pretty much no questioning what decade or period of decade each Bond film was made in, just judging by the music and style. Sometimes it extends beyond just that and they cash in on film trends of the time, like the ones we all mentioned.

reply

Yes your definitely right, then we ofcaurse have Bonds Indiana Jones adventure in Octopussy. Could you name any more examples though? would be great to know.

reply

Probably more accurate to describe Temple of Doom as Indiana Jones' Bond adventure given that it was released a year before...

reply

Octopussy was cashing in on Ghandi which came out the year before and won Best Picture. Thats where the whole adventure in India came from. Same with Temple of Doom

reply

Possibly, but you need to remember that Octopussy was a very close adaptation of the Fleming book which came out in the 1960s, long before Ghandi was even thought of.

I think it's quite possible that the Ghandi script writers came up with the idea of setting their story in India based upon that.

reply

I saw something once a while back ago, that after Ghandi came out, there was a big craze about India and this movie took advantage of that. And Spielberg wasn't thrilled about Ghandi because it beat out ET for Best Picture, so he casted India in a bad light in Temple of Doom

reply

The funny thing about Temple of Doom is that it is a prequel.

reply

Yea but that doesn't have anything to do with anything

reply

I thought you might say that.

However since we were discussing Temple of Doom I thought it was worth bringing up...

Plus it throws up a potential plot hole - How come Short Round wasn't mentioned in Raiders of the Lost Ark?

reply

What role would Short Round have in Raiders of Lost Ark? Short Round should have had a role in Crystal Skull though, even if it had to be a different actor

reply

Short Round.

reply

What a coincidence!

Indie and Short Round reunited after 38 years:-

reply

He should have been the villain in the 4th movie. Maybe Indy could have been looking for the tomb of Ghengis Khan somewhere in China instead of the silly alien Russian plot

reply

Sounds like some serious fanfic, Temple had nothing to do with Gandhi beating ET, (ET won enough awards anyway). He ripped off Gunga Din for Temple of Doom. Indeed the idea of the thuggee as villains was almost 50 years old at that point.

reply

It's not fanfic. Sounds more like Millsey spouting off more unfounded BS.

reply

All of my posts for the most part, are backed by facts

reply

Please link where Spielberg said he villainized Indians due to Gandhi beating ET.

reply

I can't. Big Tech censorship

reply

I pay no attention to fanfic

"Crocodile Dundee had already conquered the subject matter"

Simply the greatest sentence ever written on the Internet.

reply

Ahh, thanks for that, Mr Beale.

I've just watched "The Spy Who Loved Me" for the first time in yonks, noticed the discrpancy (never had before) and came here to ask the same question. Knew there had to be a reason, so thanks for providing it. 

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

Such a shame we didn't FYEO next after Spy. Moore was in his prime then and a serious more realistic approach with the right people could have worked. Would have been interesting to see if Louis Gilbert do a less silly Bond film or not though.

But to be honest it was for the best Moonraker ended the 70's because the 80's would have been the same if it started it.

reply

If Lewis Gilbert was directing For Your Eyes Only I have a feeling it would have been just as silly as Moonraker was. John Glen preferred the more down to Earth (no pun intended) Bond where he relies on his wits and his surroundings instead of gadgets.

reply

Thats a pretty big plot hole if it really says that at the end of this movie

reply

Thank god they never fixed the error, but let it be instead.

reply

It might be the biggest plot hole of all time. Bond at the end of this movie, gets his new assignment for the events upcoming in For your eyes Only as per the ending credits. Instead it gets sidetracked and he gets a space mission instead in Moonraker and then comes back and completes the mission in For Your Eyes Only

reply

Yes that is exactly what happened. First Bond visits Tracy’s grave, then he is called to Africa, he is about to investigate the Havelocks murder but instead Drax hijacks a space shuttle so Bond has to make a quit detour to space, then he goes back to his original mission which was to go to Spain and observe Hector Gonzalez.

That’s also why the Minister of Defense seemed to be in a very fowl mood towards Bond in FYEO, while Bond was busy taking Dr. Goodhead around the world again, he was desperately trying to get Bond back on Earth so that he could get him to track down Hector Gonzalez. That and that’s also the reason why Bond missed Sir Miles Messervy’s funeral.

reply

They initially planned to do For Your Eyes Only next, however that very year Star Wars came out and Broccoli decided he was going to capitalize off of the success of Star Wars so he decided to do Moonraker next, however after Moonraker he did fulfill his promise and did For Your Eyes Only after that one.

reply

Beat me to it. Well said. Thanks.

reply

Yes I know why this happened: STAR WARS!!!
