He can talk, he talks in Moonraker. "Well, here's to us".

reply

Oh so why didn't he say something sooner?
Anyway from what I understand in the novel of TSWLM they had to remove his vocal cords in order for the teeth to work

I don't know why he didn't say anything sooner, or whether or not he was intended to be mute in TSWLM and they kind of retconned it in Moonraker. But I don't think they ever said in TSWLM movie that he was mute, but just because we don't ever see him talk in that movie doesn't mean he couldn't or didn't. He could have spoken off-screen. Not speaking makes him seem more menacing, that's for sure. I would have preferred he stayed mute, and not had his little love story with Dolly and turn to the good side. But he did, and he spoke, so as far as the films are concerned, he wasn't mute.

The novelization isn't really canon with the films, as is sometimes the case with film novelizations, since writers often take some artistic license for the sake of fleshing out the story/characters. There are quite a few differences between the novelization and the actual screenplay, even though the writer of the book co-wrote the screenplay.

"He clearly talks to Max Kalba in the nightclub, when demanding the microfilm off him."

I recall him gesturing in that scene, no words came pout of his mouth.
But I agree, there was never any mention in the films about him being a mute.

I think that Jaws really didn't have to talk because he's so menacing looking. Also, according to interviews I saw with Roger Moore, Richard Kiel could only keep those silver teeth on for a few minutes at a time. So talking with them was next to impossible.

Suppose he couldn't think of anything worthwhile to say.

yeah, but come on, he was speechless until the end of the movie made after this, and if he hadn't returned he would remain mute, "suppose he couldn't think of anything worthwhile to say.", hehe, and as mentioned the role originally is suppose not to be able to speak, it feels like they pulled out all the stops in "moonraker" and went completely wild with the bond franchise, those two guys (the henchmen) appear from the beginning of this to go on to have equal parts, but they get rid of the other shorter thicker guy pretty fast while jaws even continues entering the following flick then, he must have become very popular since they even put him on the poster of moonraker, by the way, how about the train sequence in this, can you believe this big guy slapping around the woman like that, i keep forgetting the actor portraying jaws was also in one of the most famous twilight zone episodes "to serve man", as an alien, so he had already been around a long time in show business when this was made in the late 1970s, and both him and moore appeared in the "cannonball run" flicks. when his hand is around moore's hands in this it almost looks like a prop, there is a topic on this board "biggest hands ever", no kidding, by the way, i read andre the giant was considered for the role as jaws, and coincidently moore does a body slam in this, probably the only time i've seen a body slam outside of the wrestling arena, check out hulk hogan body slam andre the giant in like the most classic pro wrestling match ever. speaking of talking, there are a lot of witty comments from bond that i just don't get. "well, here's to us".

I don't recall any wrestler ever slamming Andre the Giant

reply

Big John Studd did it.

reply

I don't follow wrestling but my college professor is a huge fan. He says that Studd lost the body slam match at the 1st Wrestelmania to Andre the Giant

reply

It was Studd body slamming Andre that led to the WrestleMania Challenge.

reply

I think you are wrong. Nobody slams Andre
