Sick of Roger getting trashed!

This week, Buzzfeed did a poll to "finally settle" the "Best Bond" debate. Naturally, Connery won with (as of writing this), 38%, Craig came in 2nd with 29%, & Brosnan 3rd with 25%. Coming in last with a distant 1% was Lazenby, while Roger got 5%.

He wasn't *dead* last, but I still don't get it. Roger's Bond films did exceedingly well at the box office in the 70's. Admittedly, the last 2 of the 80's were lacking. But he's still the longest-running Bond. If he truly did a lousy job & audiences hated him, they wouldn't have kept him. Sure, they were often a little goofy (but as has been said, you can say that pattern really began with "Diamonds Are Forever")

Maybe people who weren't around in the 70's don't appreciate the context. In the 70's, people were *looking* for escape & fun. This partially explains the rise of disco & the success of Star Wars. Roger delivered fun & escapism.
He was the perfect Bond for his time. (& besides, why do you think "Nobody Does It Better" was written for *his* Bond?) ;)

Tell me about it. I loved Roger's Bond, and I honestly think that his movies are a hell of a lot better than what their reputation might say. Some moments were light in tone for sure, but Roger had his dead serious moments as well. Blasphemy maybe but overall I enjoyed Roger's 7 movies as a whole more than Connery's 6 (Some were outstanding but some were just bloody awful). He was just fun and a consistent crowd pleaser as Bond, an approach that I think is the best for the character.

There's no way Moore did a lousy job. There are so many different elements to the Bond movies, that it's really unfair to lay any criticism at the feet of whoever was playing Bond at the time.

I have to admit that, if you bunch the movies together by lead actors, the Moore movies overall are my own least favourite Bond, but that's because I personally don't enjoy their tone. But I do understand the context of their era, and you're right in saying they were hugely successful. I know people who think some of Moore's are the best Bonds overall.

Connery's not my personal favourite. He was great in the first three Bonds he did, but I reckon that even by Thunderball you could see he was getting bored, and that he'd reached the limit of his acting ability. One of my own favourite Bonds is Dalton, but he got stuck with a couple of pretty mediocre scripts and had no chance of making much impact. Different things at play, as I said.

So yeah, I agree with you that Roger Moore gets unfairly trashed.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I think you're probably right. 🐭

Man I have to agree with you here. Although my personal favourite is Pierce Brosnan, Moore is number two in my book. I mean, his Bond was probably the most stylish (double entendre intended)of them all. He knew how to wear a suit and to get a certain point across. Believe me when I say that it was extremely surprised that he was 45 when he took on the role! Regardless, his films hold up extremely well, especially after all this time. Screw all the haters. Moore for me is second only to Brosnan.

roger Moore was great but it's kind of annoying seeing his stunt man doing most of his work

reply

I thought Moore did well in the stunts the studio let him do. I sure hope you didn't expect him to jump off Mt.Asgard with the skis and parachute. He also seemed to do most of his fight scenes. Yah, as he got older say in Octo and A View, it's understandable for him to stand aside and let the stuntman do their thing.

I still think he was a lot tougher than PB tho

If I had to pick a "worst" it'd be Daniel Craig, but every actor that has played Bond, including Craig, has been great in the role and in the films they were in. Roger Moore was a great Bond, it's unfortunate time hasn't been kind to his portrayal.

reply

Moore was great. Unfortunately, the movies were going through this very campy phase while he was playing Bond.

He did show that he could be a great in a more serious Bond film when he made For Your Eyes Only.

I think this film was one of roger Moore best performances

I liked more more than Connery. Perhaps it's because Connery movies were older, but I still thought Moore was the best of the Bonds, followed by Peirce Bronson, then Connery, then Craig, and last place going to Timothy Dalton.

Polls like this don't really tell much, even among the respondents. They ask for one choice. But that doesn't really tell you where each actor ranks. It would have been better to ask for a separate score for each actor. Then we'd know the true and complete preferences. Somebody who likes Connery best may also have Moore a close second and Craig a distant last. Or Craig above Brosnan. For me, it would be Moore 9, Connery 8, Brosnan 7, Dalton 7, Lazenby 4, Craig 2. We just don't know thanks to a simplistic one vote question.

I found Connery just a little too rough-edged. Craig is just a crude brute, if you like that sort of guy. To this day, I haven't been able to watch even one of his Bond movies all the way through. Moore was more sophisticated, suave and debonair. Brosnan was in much the same mold. Of course, it didn't hurt that I liked watching reruns of the Saint series at the time. Pity Moore didn't get to be Bond at the beginning of the franchise. Connery looked far older than 32 in Dr. No, while Moore looked that age during the Saint, despite being years older.

Agree with thread. Love RM as JB.

surprised people like Craig so much, can't abide him. i would definitely rate Roger Moore more highly than him, and Brosnan.

I like Connery, but I have always liked Moore equally and some of his films rank higher for me. Live and Let Die and For Your Eyes Only are in my top five (along with Living Daylights, Casino Royale and OHMSS). Moore at his worst is still better than Connery in Diamonds Are Forever.
