The mechanics of film making has changed from the days of a director pitching an idea to the studios, having a budget, gathering cast and crew and then trying to make the film to today's process of researching demographics, studio execs having total control and trying to make the next multi-movie blockbuster. I'm leaving out quite a bit from both processes but the main point is that revenue is driving the production of movies today. Indie films don't have the budget or the years of experience in the crew and the results are usually kind of 2 dimensional.
Movies today are pointed to the audience they are made for: TV watchers, people who think a low res version seen on an ipad with crappy sound is an experience. It is just conversation fodder.
Not to say all films today are bad, just mostly not entertaining. I watch tons of movies but of those movies I watch a lot of older films.

In a word 'NO'.

This film has so much going on. Half of the film is just establishing characters. Add to that that the explosions are all real as are the live action scenes with the trucks.

It was inspiring stuff.

What do we have now? A bunch of geeks behind computers making films with all the resonance of a bad romance novel.
