Weird anti-British vibe?

I liked this film overall, but I couldn't help notice a somewhat negative tone pervading the scenes in England and regarding British officers and equipment. This surprised me...Sorry for my ignorance, but is there some reason why the Dutch don't like the British regarding WW2?

reply

I am guessing you are British and you are very insecure ... or you have a vivid imagination.

there is a bit of anti Britishness in the film.
But if you look at the history of the Dutch resistance you will see why.

The British played an amazing part in helping the resistance organisations in most occupied countries but the Dutch operation was a disaster.
The Germans broke the codes and the British ignored the warnings and kept dropping agents to their deaths.
The Germans called this Operation North Pole, sure there is a wikipedia page about it.

I did not see the anti-British sentiment in this film ... nor do I see how Op N Pole is relative to any potential anti-British sentiment. In ONP it was the Brits who fuped and lost all the paratroopers so why would the Dutch be anything but sympathetic. Help me understand???

reply

The Dutch knew that British actions had lead to the death of Dutch patriots,it mostly not British agents who died.

Did they also feel that Holland was a sideshow compared with France?

There is a scene in the film where the Dutch resistance get a delivery of radios that don't work, they say typical British or something similar.

Operation Market garden was a failure and the Dutch suffered a lot after it failed,it was a British led and planned operation.

The failure of the Dutch resistance is well explained in the Resistance museum in Amsterdam.

Perhaps I could not recognize this anti-Britsh vib in the film ... because it is inconceivable to me. Simply put the Nazis take your country (Holland)... while the British fight for years to defeat the Nazis and ultimately liberate your country ... and yet there are Dutch people who are less than grateful??? Where would the Dutch be if Britain failed to beat the Nazis???

Talk about ingrates? This anti-British feeling makes no sense to me.

reply

I agree with you,the Dutch might have a more balanced view now but I understand the bad feelings around the war period.

The French are not usually grateful for all the British did for them during the war(yes I know about sinking their navy) but De Gaulle did save the honour of France by organising the free French so I forgive him writing the British out of French history.

Interesting ... you know what they say ... if you aren't Dutch ... you aren't much!

I would love to go to the Resistance museum in Amsterdam! Warsaw also has a really great one ... and I did two (Home Army & Schindler Factory) in Krakow.
