A new take on the 1977 Burt Reynolds-Sally Field hit action comedy film is in the works at Universal Content Productions, inspired by the genre of 1970s and 1980s drive-in double features. No network is yet attached. "The potential series explores the crossroads where humble realities meet those larger-than-life, all in a blast of tailpipe exhaust," per The Hollywood Reporter. MacFarlane and McBride are among the executive producers, with David Gordon Green and his frequent collaborator Brian Sides serving as writers. "Growing up in the south, Smokey and the Bandit was an iconic franchise for me. The legacy of these characters is a playground of swagger and sass that I'm excited to dig into,” said Green, who was born in Little Rock and raised in Texas.
