One weird ass movie.

This has to be one of the weirdest movies I've seen.

How is it weird? The fight scenes are exaggerated for dramatic effect and the characterizations of the players seems stereotypical. I had a friend who worked for the Philadelphia Firebirds (of the old NAHL) in the 70s and the banter between the players, according to the stories he told, was far more explicit than in the movie.

Saying Slap Shot is weird is like saying Toy Story was weird. Was is too much Scifi? You obviously havent seen A Clockwork Orange.

I think this movie, in terms of its tone, is far weirder than a clockwork orange, which is totally and masterfully controlled and it's violence and chaos make sense to serve the message. This movie seems completely random and nothing seems to matter or have any narrative purpose. LIke newman's character just says that thing about the guys wife being a lesbian, something he just happened across, that helps them win, then he puts in the brothers, who were hired by the owner and stood as a comic foil to the team falling apart, but they just happen to be insanely violent crushers on the ice, which then leads to the whole team acting like them. There are some meaningless moments with the women in his life and then it actually ends with a long hockey game despite the fact that the team winning games had very little import to the film previously. Which of course turns into a strip scene when the impotent guy sees his wife with a perm, obviously! This is one of the weirdest and possibly worst films I've seen in a while.

Worst? Its the greatest hockey film ever made. The violence the dirty language is awesome.

reply

Yeah glad I don't have your taste in movies.

reply

Don't forget the gratuitous stripping.

Although I did not find it one of the worst movies I ever saw (it was ok), your description was pretty close to what I would have wrote. Good synopsis. I bet if I were a hockey fan or watching it when it originally came out back in the 70s I would have appreciated it more.

The next time you two over examine a film like a book essay, stop, relax your brain, have some beer ready and re-watch. You won't regret it.
