The ending game non-cliche and still a tad of a let down

*I love this movie, let me get that out now.

**While it is a cliche, Stan Marsh jokes about this during the episode where he's coaching a pee-wee hockey team, I wanted them win the game in the end**

Coach! What the hell were you thinking?
# 3: We can't beat Denver County.
Stan: Well, sure we can.
# 6: Last time we played Denver they scored seven times.
Stan: Look, guys. I believe in you. Nelson believes in you. Doesn't that count for anything?
# 8: No, 'cause they're gonna kill us.
Stan: They're not gonna kill us.
# 6: That's what Steve Irwin said about those stingrays.
Stan: [thinks a bit] Haven't you guys ever seen these movies? We're just supposed to rally together, believe in ourselves, and we win in the end.

I expected in the final game there'd be 10 parts "old-time hockey" and 1 part "heart" and in the end they'd win the game, some would go to the NHL, others would coach, others return to the league, and such. A cliched ending, but...

Instead we have the pretty-boy, college-educated (he's too good for the team attitude) guy, skate to a strip...get sucker punched, the other team automatically forfeits.

It kind is like getting a lawsuit reward since you slipped on the ice in a supermarket shopping lot.

Not at all. It was a perfect circus on ice that the Chiefs had created

Maybe I am seeing it all wrong, through the prism of traditional Hollywood, cliches themselves. Maybe I need to see it more of a Chief's way: old time hockey+other team's anger=their own downfall.
