'It's a giant walrus!'

Awful, just awful.

Even as a kid in the '60s I thought Ray Harryhausen's effects were embarrassing. All this revisionist nonsense about him being a genius is so hard to swallow.

reply

Eye of the beholder, I guess.

I thought they looked great then and now.

reply

I guess you have no respect for how difficult it is to create lifelike movements from a small puppet. Watch a Harryhausen film and compare the stop motion from Gwangi or One Million BC and compare it to the garbage stop motion to a film like Dinosaurus.
You can always tell a stop motion puppet isn't real, but the difference, and what makes Harryhausen a genius is his ability to bring about emotions for his characters that lesser animations could never create.

reply

The amount of time and effort put into stop motion affects cannot be ignored. How tedious yet impressive the final result. Some CGI may look better but it can be done by anyone with an iPhone in a few minutes.

reply

On the contrary:

Harryhausen makes the scene work. There is no revisionism. His effects were applauded even in his time.

Children these days have no respect.

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

reply

I really feel sorry for people who have no imagination or can't suspend their disbelief, especially kids.

Blasphemy: It's a victimless crime

Oh dear...

Blasphemy: It's a victimless crime

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I never cared for him either.

reply

Well, it's hard to explain the significance of pearls to swine. It shouldn't be surprising, then, that you don't appreciate the man's work.
