the best nazi zombie movie

That said, there are not too many in the genre, but despite its low budget, this is a cool movie. Goes a long way to establishing a very creepy mood and atmosphere better than most movies. The cinematography works well, and the sense of dread you'd expect from a good horror flick is there, with the stranded tourists struggling to make it through the night. The imagery of the Nazi soldiers emerging out of the water alone is reason to rent or buy. A very underrated movie that is now out on DVD. Get it!

I think the thing to remember here is they arent zombies. (if i remember correctly) - they are the results of the super soldier experiements... so besides being a slightly unique approach - we cant apply Romero Zombie rules per say.

But a zombie does not have to be the cause of a virus. A zombie can be made by scientific experiments, viruses, nuclear waste and other chemicals, and necromancers. But you are right, the classic zombie is one made by a virus.

Really? Ever heard of Voodoo, where the zombie myth started?

"Really? Ever heard of Voodoo, where the zombie myth started?"
Yes. Zombification of people using the poison from a pufferfish was the actual begininning, then people thought of the voodoo. I was talking about Romero zombies. Sorry for not making that clear.

This movie always freaked me out as a kid and the DVD is pretty cool...A much classier effort than Oasis of Zombies or Zombie Lake...were those the only two other Nazi zombie movies?

In addition to these there exists Night of the Zombies which is also about nazi zombies. But i haven't seen it.... yet ;) .

reply

I havent seen it too, but it being in the IMDb's bottom 10 horror films, that speaks for itself.

Shock Waves is way ahead in the Nazi zombies sub genre.

Night of the Zombies is not a nazi zombie movie at all. i own it

at its most basic, its a ripoff of dawn of the dead. some of the main characters are dressed in the same blue jumpsuits the swat guys in DOTD are wearing (and they're clearing a building of people just like DOTD too), and they even used the same soundtrack!

these zombies are made by a leak at a nuclear power plant tho

its not a terrible movie, but its not great either. i liked it enough to buy it at least

reply

dawn of the dead (aka 'Zombi') and Night of the Zombies (aka 'Hell of the Living Dead') are actually different soundtracks, both by the same band, Goblin. Dawn had it's own soundtrack and Night used most of the stuff from 'Contamination' soundtrack.

The easiest way to do that effect (without drowning the actors playing the Nazi Zombies) is to simply film them in reverse walking backwards slowly (1/2 speed) and then submerging. The 1/2 speed is to reduce the splash factor and make the water appear to be glass-smooth.

Then you reverse & speed up the film section so it looks like they are magically surfacing at regular speed.

I agree, the Nazi's surfacing are permanently etched into my memory..Unforgettable. I saw something recently that attests to the sheer influential power of this underrated sci-fi horror classic; It was an armed services recruitment tv commercial, for the Marines or maybe the Navy (SEALS). It depicted special forces guys coming up out of the water slowly, facing the camera. It was pure Shock Waves!

The first Nazi zombie movie would have been "The Frozen Dead" starring Dana Andrews r.1966.

reply

there is two night of the zombies, one by vincent dawn which is horrible in my opinion and then there is night of the zombies directed by joel m reed. i saw both of them and from what i remember i really liked the joel m reed version. if i was to see it now i probably would hate it because i have read bad things about it.

reply

I remember seeing the trailer for this at the begining of the original Tales from the Crypt starring joan collins. This movie seemed so interesting, then when i saw it, it was only just ok. I like Imprudence better.

reply

there is one other nazi zombie movei that i saw a while ago that was directed by joel m reed called night of the zombies, not to be confused with the itialian zombie fi;m by vincent dawn of the same tittle. it's really hard to find because they both have the same name and both were released the same year.

I agree; "Shock Waves" is an excellent moody little horror gem that's totally worthy of its cult status. The image of those creepy blonde Aryan undead soldiers slowly goose-stepping out of the ocean is truly eerie and unforgettable. Nice cast as well, with especially solid acting by the always great Peter Cushing, the ever reliable John Carradine, the lovely Brooke Adams and the amiable Luke Halpin. I likewise really dug the wonky synthesizer score and appreciated the movie's overall emphasis on a spooky tone over more graphic and visceral cheap scares.

Yeah, yeah, but "Night of the Living Mogfon" with Leo Carrillo and Lon Chaney,Jr. is far better.

Nothing exists more beautifully than nothing.

Dead Snow is now the best nazi zombie movie ever.

reply

I agree, the Norwegian horror movie DØD SNØ is an excellent nazi zombie movie, funny, creepy and gory.

But SHOCK WAVES is as strong as ever, even after 36 years. I consider it a cult classic in its own rights.

i know these comments were posted before this movie was made but i'd say 'dead snow (2009)' is my favorite nazi zombie movie.
