an intimate epic

this is my first ray film and i really liked it. i thought all the characters were really interesting. i feel like if this had been directed by david lean or even wolfgang peterson it'd have been a much bigger more sprawling film but here is a big story told in an intimate way that only matters in what the characters are saying and feeling. really good movie.

How disappointing to find virtually no comments here on this truly excellent (IMO almost masterpiece of a) film

I have heard a lot too about Ray, but found nothing special about this movie. Can you tell us what you enjoyed in this movie?

reply

I agree. I didn't think this was one of Ray's better films.

I'd give it 6 out of 10.

It's a good film. I rated it a decent 7/10. It's not as tighly-woven as Ray's better films but it has its qualities, especially from a visual perspective (typically for Ray) and the performances were solid from the chess players and the King. It was nice to see Richard Attenborough having a role too (I wonder if Satyajit Ray ever saw Attenborough's 'Gandhi' some years later?)
