The noseless murder victim in the car

Hi,

I can't seem to figure out what the murder investigation scene has to do with the rest of the plot. The dialogue during this scene doesn't really seem to really explain it.

Thanks!!

THis was the corpse of the detective that went to check out the events in the building that Allison lived in. Remember, you saw (or should have) saw him walk into the building right before Allison wakes up and hears the noises upstairs. When she goes to check it out (armed with the knife...remember this is the 70s), she thinks she sees her father, this scares her to death, she runs out of upstairs apartment but on her way out, her father gets in the way which is really the detective but Allison sees him as her father. She stabs him multiple times and slices off part of his nose in the process. Someone, either Michael or one of his associates, or perhaps even someone who was in on it from the side of the church (the priest that keeps following Allison around) could have dumped the body in the old junk yard.

A very effective scene and way ahead of its time. Great movie!

Perfect, guys - thank you so much. I don't know how I missed that but that makes perfect sense. :)

What was the (ex) detective doing there to begin with?

I think maybe to investigate. However, my cousin believes that perhaps Michael may have had him go in to make further noises in order to scare Alison so that she will lose her mind, kill herself, and what money she had would go to him. I've read the book and it explains Michael's character a lot more. He was quite a shady character. This theory also makes sense because the cop already had some shady accusations to pin on Michael but just didn't have any evidence. If you remember their conversation, the cop suggests to his assistant that "maybe Brenner pushed his ex wife off the bridge", meaning that Michael had something to do with the death of his ex wife and now he is up to his old tricks.

I think this movie had so much potential but perhaps the slopping editing made it lose some of its impact.

I watched it again and it made it a bit clearer. The lawyer was a bad guy but I don't think he wanted to hurt her. What good would that have done him? Besides, he wanted her to marry him and not move into that house in the beginning.
But the only sore spot against that movie was why the hell didn't she split ASAP or at least her friends hound her to move out as soon as she reported all that creepy stuff?

Well you've got to remember that the forces at work (the Catholic Church and the Satanic forces) had her mind programmed. Think of her (Alison) as the battleground between good and evil.

Michael had nothing to do with it. He was a bad guy because he had killed his alcoholic wife and gotten away with it, but he seemed genuinely worried about Allison. He sent the investigator there to see what was going on, and presumably the detective was killed by Allison, when she thought it was her dead father. His wounds were the same as what we see her do to the walking corpse father.
