Mystery of the changing staircase

Check out 0:39:07. When Alison and the real estate lady are outside the priest's door at apartment 5A, the staircase to the right of the door appears to go up and to the left. A few cuts later, both women go through that doorway DOWN a set of stairs. I'm not sure if this is an illusion caused deliberately, or caused unintentionally by a slightly different camera angle. Does anyone have information about this? Does anyone else see it the same way I do?

Yes, I noticed that a month ago when first watching the film. It struck me as odd. I listened to all three commentaries, and each of the four viewings I noticed this odd stairwell scene. It is very bizarre looking.

I think that on the lower level, the staircase goes up, then splits left and right. During the finale, you can see her try to go up the left stairwell, but her dead father is blocking the way. She has to go up the right stairwell instead, right up to the old priest's room.

It has to be a weird camera angle where we are seeing the stairway across from the one that leads to the priest's room. That is why it looks like it is going up.

That is the best I can do! 

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

That was my theory too. When they both go back down, it seems that they descend what must be a short staircase that leads to a landing that has the left staircase going up. What struck me as weird was that in the first shot, it really appears as though the staircase that goes up and left comes right down to the doorway where they're standing, leaving no room for there to be one going down.

And what about that little set of stairs IN her apartment? Where could those possibly go?
