Armand's motives

Was Armand playing games with Eliane just to see how far he could take his sexual degradation, or was he driven to undermine her because of his lowered social status? There is much made about him being a mere shop boy, and he seems at first to be surprised by her apparent attraction to him. He quickly takes advantage of this, and delights in finding new ways to expose and humiliate her. This was a wicked flick--it makes 9 1/2 Weeks look like a Disney movie! Franco Nero was such a sexy brute (but he really needed to get his balls busted!).

Both. As you say, he was first surprised by her reaction, but then decided to see how far she would go. His motive wasn't only sexual but also humiliation. That said, when he talked to her about her daughter, he was only thinking about sex, not sexual games or social class.

I've a question: Was Elaine, the mother, present when her daughter and Armand doing it? They did show her holding Armand and her daughter's hands, so it looks like she was there.

By the way, this is by far the best movie on submission, nothing even comes close to this one.
