The music

The only good part of the movie was the music. The script is depressing.

The music was one of the major characters in the film, if it can be considered a character. Without it, there really would have been no point of the movie, just a story about a guy who hates where he lives, what he does for a living, treats women like dirt and has a bunch of losers for friends.

All the things you mentioned is what makes the SNF great, you can say the music is the main draw, but for me and others it's all the supporting characters that make the film so great, so what if it's dark and depressing, that's the world they lived in. To say that without the music there would be no point to the movie is stupid, there's a great story in the film, it's about a guy with great talent for dance and how his environment and upbringing is holding him back, the final scene at the bridge is what finally gets Tony to leave and try to pursue his gift and talent for dancing. The music and the songs that were chosen fit perfectly into each scene and help tell the story. If you had no story the songs would have no meaning and vise versa for music without a story.

Don't get me wrong, I love everything about the movie! But when you get to the core of the plot, it's about a dude who loves to disco and wants to use his dancing as a springboard to a better life. Take that away from him, and he's pretty much got nothing except a dead-end job at a paint store, and a bunch of friends that drain any hope he has of getting out of Brooklyn. The music he dances to is one of the main characters. Not to mention, the soundtrack was the #1 selling record of all time until Thriller, and the #1 film soundtrack until Purple Rain.
