The Women in This Film

are not attractive.

Were women this homely in the late-70s? Couldn't they have found better looking female actors?

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

I think that's the point. They do not have the means to go to top hair salons or get expensive weekly facials, buy expensive makeup & clothing. Nor do I think they eat nutritious foods. The guys are not all that good looking either. They're not supposed to be glamorous. It's a realistic film.

Sure, but that wasn't the plan. This was a dark snapshot of Brooklyn N.Y. during the disco heyday, and the characters were not supposed to be perfect.

But I'll tell you what; I'd rather any of these girls than the tatted and pierced skanks that dominate film and TV today. At least the SNF girls could wear a dress and not have their legs look like they were infected with gas gangrene.

It is bad to drink Jobus rum. Very bad.

The OP's as dismissive of the actresses, as many of the male characters are of the female characters.🐭

I thought this thread was going to be about how the female characters were not developed. I expected too much.

They weren't homely at all, just adhering to the styles of the time, with that type of hair and makeup. That was what was considered attractive in those days. If the same women were young today and in movies they'd be made up in the style of today and probably be considered very attractive. Have a look at Donna Mills in Play Misty For Me as another example - she's a beautiful women by any standards but that haircut did her no favours.

Realistic? Not really. Streetwise Bay Ridge wops didn't go to discos in the 70s. That was not their style any more than driving beat up Impalas was. Pre-yuppie whites, gays, and blacks were what you really found in the discoteques. Nik Cohn later admitted he fabricated the idea that Bay Ridge street toughs liked dancing to disco in his article "Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night", which inspired the film. Wanna see the real disco scene depicted in film? Watch "The Last Days of Disco".

The women were unattractive because they were from the northeast! The most attractive women come from places like Austin, Texas and southern California!

So true!

The validity of my answers is highly dependent on the intelligence of the question..or lack thereof.
