remake

Does anyone think this would make a good remake? Reasons why or why not?
They're remaking everything else? would have better special effects which
would make it more realistic. It could have a more psychological
backround on the "young man" character. For example he could be disgruntled
amusement park employee and getting revenge.

reply

Well 'Femgoo' Unfortunately that's the current trend today in 'BalsaWood'
Whoop's i mean HollyWood,
That's an interesting point you've made about a 'Remake' which of course could be inevitable,
Iam sure if they did they certainly would elaborate further on the Mysterious 'young man' character Timothy Bottom's played in the classic '77 version.
perhaps he probably will be an iraq war veteran who's a dab hand in electronics and such or he very well may be an amusement park employee who was fired.
As you mention Special Effect's okay...they probably will be able to please all the gorehounds out there if they recreate a devastating de-railment,
{Iam not being a 'killjoy' but if you look at 'Roller Coaster's Derailment you'll see that carefully duplicated 'Dummy's were used, of course today's CGI is still in progress, so we'll see what they'll come up with(maybe a job for Kng efx's Who knows?
Who knows one things for sure they wont be able to top this classic,
And What about George Segal? maybe he'll play Harry Caulder's Boss the role which Henry Fonda played?

reply

it would be cool to see this movie as a remake, one of the best parts of his movie though was the fact that you didnt know anything about Timothy Bottom's Character, also they shouldn't use any form of CGI, CGI is used way to much, alot of times when it shouldn't be.

reply

I agree with you! CGI is a lazy filmmaker's tool, which granted is wholly over done these days, less is more you know?

reply

The movie itself borrows heavily from an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

In terms of a present day remake, I would thumbs down that proposition PDQ.

Old and busted: suspense and tension in a movie
The new hotness: special effects and shallow trendy acting types

Those would spell the kiss of death for a remake.

Especially since the suspense was so finely tuned, it truly cant get any better. Period.

I rarely think a film should be remade, but I somethies think of what it would be like if they did remake this one. However, I have many reservations. I thought "The Poseidon Adventure" would be a neat remake choice, and they blew it badly. If they WERE to do it, I think Albert Brooks would be a neat choice for Caulder, as he has a simlar look and personality. I think he could convincingly play the laughs and the seriosness well. Segal would be a fun choice for Davenport, With a cameo from Timothy Bottoms as the William Prince character. I also think a mellow version of Samuel L. Jackson would be ideal for Agent Hoyt.

That being said, it would most likely be turned into the next star vehicle for Topher Grace, so my heart says to leave it as it is.

I've only seen two films that I thought were better than the original. Carpenter's "The Thing", and the new "Ocean's Eleven". I don't think a remake of this would top the original.

Excellent Suggestion! I was watching this very classic hour's ago!
And it still stand's out if only they would bring back 'sensarround'
I only hope to god we dont get a half assed remake,

reply

During last year's coaster convention at Magic Mountain, they had resurrected an old Sensurround system and were able to show the movie with it. They also had a panel diescussion with Timothy Bottoms and some others from the movie. As well as major ride time on the Revolution, of course :)

reply

I think there should be a remake due to the more intense rollercoasters these days - imagine the crashing rollercoaster being Top Thrill Dragster or X!

"How was last night?"
"It was fantastic! I can't see!"

reply

They would not dare remake "Rollercoaster" today.

Too many terrorist threats.

Also, huge accidents come with bad publicity, whether or not the accident in question actually happened.

And we saw how bad "Final Destination 3" was. If the audience had known what coaster that was, it wouldn't have had riders for a month.

reply

If you want to know, it was the Vancouver Corkscrew at the PNE.

reply

about the Bomber's reasons. the Original script had a scene between hiom and has mother bringing out the fact that they ownd a small amusement park and was going out of business because of one of the targeted parks

reply

They did remake it: it's called Final Destination 3

reply

FD3 was a completely different movie: I don't remember the "bad" guy being a supernatural force killing his victims in a certain order in Rollercoaster.

A remake would be cool, but how hard would it be to find an old seaside amusement park these days? My favorite scenes and my draw to the movie are the scenes at "Ocean View Park". This was one of my personal childhood parks, and I knew it well. I only wish the "Rocket" was as long a ride as potrayed in the movie. Whew, what a coaster!!! The whole park was so cool and it sat on the Chesapeake Bay in Norfolk Va. I can clearly remember the smells of cotton candy and the creak of the rides in that old park. The occasional sound of waves could be heard over the noises in the park. It was used in a made for TV movies a few years later and destroyed completely after that. Thanks to parks like Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion, the old parks have taken a hit! Anyway, what I wanted to say was that I think the old park was essential to the setting. It gave it a "he can hit anywhere" feel and it doesn't have to be some mega park! Actually, the name of the coaster at Ocean View was the Skyrocket and only changed to the rocket for the movie! If they could find an old park like that, then maybe they'd have a chance! I have more Ocean View Trivia if interested.

While I'll admit that remakes are often butchered and never live up to the original, I would have to think a movie loosely based off of this movie would be a huge hit. Rollercoasters are even more popular today than they were when this movie was made. With so many boring redundant movies out there, wouldn't this storyline be a nice break from the norm?

reply

~ Nah!.. It wouldn't suit for this time. 
