What did you think of George Segal as Harry Calder?

Just curious.

I thought he looked like a love child of Harvey Keitel and Craig Wasson (who, according to IMDb, is supposed to have made his film debut in Rollercoaster. DidnĀ“t spot him myself, though).

To frankzkabuki - Craig Wasson was the guy who sold his ticket to the first rollercoaster ride to Timothy Bottoms.

To the OP - I thought Segal did a decent job. It wasn't exactly a role that called for anything too deep so most capable actors probably could have done a good job with it. Segal did fine.

I'll always remember George Segal for this movie. Even now seeing him on The Goldbergs. Hard to believe that's Harry Calder now

reply

He gave the same performance as he did as Morris Brummel in No Way To Treat a Lady, only with a lot more make-up and hair dye. (Actually I liked the double performances.)

reply

Actually jrs, another guy sells his ticket to Bottoms. Wasson's behind him in line and says "You're gonna miss the first ride, man?" After the ride, the girlfriend who sat with TB runs up to the guy and hugs him.

Wasson and his girlfriend go on the second ride, and sit where the bomb was planted.

I thought he was great, both him and Widmark

I met George Segal on the set of CALIFORNIA SPLIT. A very nice guy, unlike Elliott Gould.

reply

I thought his performance was fine, but I would like to have seen more of Susan Strasberg. She's the reason I went to see the film. And, she's beautiful in it.

reply

Was Elliott Gould not nice then? I always liked him - worked for some Americans in the 1970s and my boss looked just like him! My favourite of EG's films was a very obscure seldom seen film called 'Busting' which is never shown anywhere and I can't get a DVD of in the UK.

reply

Gosh it's such a long time since I've seen this film, they never show it anymore in the UK. I really liked George Segal in this, I like his sarcastic byplay with the villan, on the phone. "I'm not a fan!" Great stuff.

"GO HOME AND WATCH SESAME STREET!" :D

He was cool, tough, funny, and perfect overall. It was just great casting.
