5/10. Here's why:

THE RESCUERS wastes its interesting concept on a plot that, even by 1977, was very by-the-numbers. The animation and pacing are good enough and the cave scene is thrilling, but the songs are boring. BERNARD & BIANCA are unmemorable characters, while PENNY is a compelling one.

Any thoughts?

reply

Thoughts? All I read is a short series of 'fancy' words meant to distract the reader from the fact that the "analysis" is anything but substantial or convincing, due to broad claims without back-up or specific evidence.

No offense, but not anyone can be a critic.

Um the songs are far from boring. They fit the movie perfectly and have great melodies.

You can say that again.

"The Journey"- We haven't even MET Penny yet and already we sympathize with her and want her to be helped. They say the song is meant to make us feel for...the bottle? For reals? A glass bottle floating across the Atlantic, nearly being mowed down by ships? Treacherous, sure, but it's a bottle. It isn't alive. It doesn't have feelings. We worry more about that little girl we saw trapped on that boat.

"Someone's Waiting for You"- We know her now, and love her even more, wanting very much for her to be rescued.

"Tomorrow is Another Day"- Heading off to save the day. Things may get a little perilous, but keeping the faith and following your heart will lead to positive results. In other words, it's not THAT upbeat, but it's not sad. It's optimistic.

The song is clearly written from the perspective of the bottle:

"I'm lost at sea without a friend
This journey, will it ever end?"

Penny is neither lost at sea nor undergoing a journey. The song draws emotion towards an inanimate object on a mission concerning the welfare of an innocent child. That's what makes the song both unique and provocative.

Well, it all depends on how you look at it.

I actually found it nice that the songs were more than the filler they often are in Disney films

I give Hunchback of Notre Dame 6/10. I like it's dark themes, but it's not really my favorite. I don't mind them leaving out Gringoire, but I think Phoebus could've been left a villain in the Disney version. I don't really care too much for the gargoyles but I like one of them being voiced by George from Seinfeld.

Why are you talking about that movie here instead of its forum?

I don't want to risk the fans of the film flaming me.

It's a forum. We're all allowed to voice our opinions.

I'd have similar opinions to you, but I think in every aspect of this movie it's AWFUL and worth throwing away!

Are you talking about Rescuers or Hunchback?

It's your opinion, of course, but I urge you to give The Rescuers a chance. It's an underrated, unsung hero of the Disney library. I guess it gets overlooked because it's dark, melancholy, less supernatural, not based on a fairy tale, no princess, none of the characters IN the movie sing songs ('Rescue Aid Society' doesn't count), and there's no bumbling, humorous sidekick. But it was the first animated Disney feature to get a sequel, and there were TWO proposed spin-off/follow-ups: Chip'N Dale Rescue Rangers was originally going to be a Rescuers show before production began on Down Under, and Penny was originally going to be the girl in Oliver & Company before they recreated her and renamed her Jenny.
It was also the last animated feature to be worked on by ALL NINE of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men. It also redefined the rough look of the animation that originated with 101 Dalmatians.

This film has a real legacy.

Of course I'm talking about "The Rescuers"! I personally like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", and what I was saying is that THE RESCUERS is worth being a garbage animated movie! If I had my "Rescuers" DVD in my apartment, I would take it out of my DVD player, destroy the disc in half with my foot, throw the broken disc into the trash can and pee on it in the garbage when I'm by myself!

reply

I think you may have issues.

reply

No, there's nothing wrong with that! This recent summer, I actually got rid of my family's DVD of "Bambi 2" and our VHS of "The Land Before Time 2: The Great Valley Adventure". For both those times, I went into my bedroom at home, closed the door and left the window shades drawn, and after I broke both sequels I took out the garbage can in my room, peed on the damage I threw away and washed my hands in the bathroom sink afterwards, without anyone seeing what I was doing.

reply

Then why did you buy them in the first place?

reply

Unfortunately, my parents bought our family the VHS of the STUPID Great Valley Adventure Movie, that I NEVER liked! Also, that Land Before Time sequel is my second least favorite movie in the world, my first being "Gigli", the awful film with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Also, I worked to buy the DVD of "Bambi 2" in 2006 when I was in 5th grade, and when I started college I decided I didn't like that one anymore.

reply

So instead of just putting them in a yard sale or donating them where someone who would actually LIKE them might buy them, you saw fit to destroy them?

reply

Why not? Because I think they're poison ivy, and they should've NEVER EVEN BEEN MADE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

reply

I think I actually give Hunchback of Notre Dame a 5/10.

Metallica, Iron Maiden and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan.
