October crisis reference.

I've just read some reviews, and I was surprised nobody else noticed the similarities between the second half of the movie, and the Quebec October crisis of 1970.

The movie was made 6 years after the application of the martial law involving the canadian army being all over in Montreal. I mean, the whole quarantine thing seems like a clear and obvious metaphor about this event.

Most people today, at least outside of Canada, don't know about it. I certainly didn't, and wasn't aware that Cronenberg was referencing a real event until hearing the DVD comentary.

I think Cronenberg DOES work often; considering his vision, and aside from David Lynch, he's the only director working in the mainstream who is allowed to get away with everything he does.
