Most disturbing scene?

For me, the most disturbing scene would be the shopping mall scene when, in an attempt to gun down the one rabid lunatic, the police officer's stray bullet
hits the man dressed as Santa right in front of the kids. David Cronenberg even said on the commentary, that scene is for eveyone whose ever hated the commercialization of holidays.

In that same scene, I think I may have found a goof: The police officer yells at the rabid "Stop or I'll shoot!" What makes him think that a bloodthirsty ghoul is going to listen to the law? The only thing it's probably thinking is "Me hungry! Me want human blood!"

But, other than that nitpick, it was a pretty messed up film. It's another film I saw on Saturday Nightmares On the USA Network. I miss that program and I wish they would bring it back.

That was Commander USA's Groovie movies. I liked that show too, and USA's Sci-Fri Theatre. I miss shows like that and I wish they'de have shows like that again.

In the 80's, USA was at their best. i wish they would be the same like they were back in those days. Even if they brought back USA Up All Night that would be great.

The fact that the movie has followers is disturbing enough.

Holy crap, I'm watching this movie right now & I had to stop to say this...They freaking shot Santa!!!!!! Sorry...kind of "I can't believe I just saw that happen" moment.

reply

I feel bad for a kid if they saw that scene and said "Mommy! Mommy! They shot Santa!"

Pretty cryptic.

reply

I feel bad for a kid whose parents let him watch crap like that at an age that they still believe in Santee Claus.

reply

Same here happy. I mean even I, at the age of 28, all grown up, seeing that scene was saying "Oh My God!" I just liked getting sucker punched right in the stomach and getting the wind knocked out of you.

reply

imagine how hard it must have been for the police officer to tell his kids what he did at work today,
"kids, daddy killed santa claus. there's not going to be a christmas this year"

reply

You mean Santa doesn't exist?

"I don't *beep* believe this! Can everyone stop gettin' shot?"

reply

that was me, dude-saw this at a drive in-my Mom took us to see horror movies- was 5 and had nightmares for years-

reply

Yes that scene was also freaky, plus the scene where the Dr. goes nuts during surgery was messed up too.

Probably the ending, seeing the protagonist/antagonist (what would Rose be anyway?) thrown into the trash like that ended the whole thing on a cold note for me, similar to seeing Harry's fate at the end of Requiem for a Dream

I can't believe some of you chose the Santa scene. That's more darkly humorous than disturbing.

Most disturbing: IMPLIED DEAD BABY.

Kids dying trumps Santas dying.

reply

I need to watch this again, because I accually forgot all about that scene. But yeah, dead baby, thats pretty disturbing, especially since my sister just had a baby too. So that makes it more disturbing.

"PEOPLE OF EARTH, YOURE PLANET IS ABOUT TO BE DESTROYED, I'M SO TERRIBLY SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE!"

reply

Undoubtedly the implied killing of the baby is a thousand times more disturbing than anything else in the film.

It is a dreadful concept to ponder and one which I wish wasn't in the film at all. My stomach knots at the thought of someone hurting a baby.

Infanticide for me, is the most apalling act imaginable and is even too disturbing to grapple with in a fiction movie.

I like RABID but I find the terrible implication of that scene so awful that it overshadows the rest of the film.

And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.

reply

I understand that that scene may make your stomach knot up, but I definitely don't think it should have been left out of the film. That's what makes it a horror movie, if you take out everything you don't want to see then why watch horror movies at all? I mean we all know it wasn't a real baby, but horror is supposed to stun your senses and leave you shocked, that's why it's so great!

reply

When Santa got aced I laughed. Quality scene. Most disturbing for me was one of the penis scenes probably, like when the doctor is poking about in her armpit and you sort of see the tube just under the surface. More disgusting than disturbing, but still.

reply

I agree, I was most grossed-out by the simple implication that the baby was devoured when the one guy came home, looking for his wife, and slowly came to the realization that both she & the baby were "missing..."

The, as I call it, armpit vagina
I'm sure you're not the only one who referred to it as that...everyone called it that. In fact it's more like an armpit vagina housing a mini bloodsucking penis, with a thorn.

reply

Definitely the most disturbing to me was the implied eaten baby. As a parent, seeing something like that is a little too disturbing to be entertaining. I watched it with a room full of people and most laughed during the darkly comic Santa shooting scene but the room was completely silent and folks looked quite horrified during the baby scene.

reply

Yes, the baby scene was quite disturbing. And now that I think of it, the Santa scene was somewhat darkly humorous.
