Cronenberg's commentary on the special edition

cronenberg commentaries usually are.

Cronenberg is one of the few people I know to whom I could say, "Cover anything you want, just please keep talking."

I actually called him on the phone as a teenager in the 70's and we talked for about an hour.

reply

Hmmmnnnn - he makes excellent films, gives the BEST commentaries of any director and I heard from a friend who interviewed him at length for a documentary that was nicest, friendliest person out of any of the film directors he's met (and he's interviewed a lot of top directors).

Maybe he fiddles his taxes or some such but if I were a catholic I'd be nominating him for (film) sainthood!

reply

Please spill the beans. What does he discuss on the commentary?

Last film seen: Robert Bresson's Pickpocket - Brilliant!

It's pretty boring actually - he repeats his delivery throughout:
"And who hasn't wanted to smash a phone"
"Haven't we all wanted to bite a person's ear off?"
"Im quite pleased."
"It's potent - very potent"
"Invented inventions I invented"
"My films are groundbreaking"

I can't get enough of his commentaries.

My favourite part of this one involves the machine gunning of a mall Santa. As I recall, he can't contain his laughter. He says something like he's always hated the way Christmas plays out in our culture and he's always wanted to do something similar.

I love him. I love his humour, his intelligence! Wonderful guy!

Very good commentator.

I listened to it last night and found it an interesting commentary. He mentioned that he got a kick out of the Santa killing scene as he found Christmas to be full of phoney joviality. Also that the scenes of martial law were reminiscent of those imposed on the Canadian public when a politician was killed there by Quebec separatists. And that Robin Williams gave a performance and tried to speak in a Quebec accent but got it wrong and used a French accent. Other interesting tidbits as well.
