What's with the title?

I'm just wondering... why "The Inglorious Bastards"?
What does that title have to do with the movie?
Did they select it simply because it sounded cool?

I mean, the original title "Quel maledetto treno blindato" literally translates to "That damned armored train", which has nothing to do with "Inglorious Bastards" - in fact that title sort of makes sense, considering the final part of the plot (though the movie is more like a sequence of multiple loosely connected plots).

Just curious...

According to the DVD commentary, Castellari always intended Inglorious Bastards to be the title of the film, but the (Italian) studio made him give it an "original" Italian title (and, if I recall correctly, decided what it would be as well).

What it has to do witth the movie is that all of the "heroes" are, well, inglorious bastards.

Why would you think it doesn't make sense or has nothing to do with the movie? The main characters; the American soldiers, are all "inglorious bastards." At the beginning of the movie they were prisoners (not POWs, but prisoners of other Americans).
