how is it different? i wonder if in 1975 regular folks could join that gym or if it was reserved only for the best.

The 75' version only had free weights that were mostly inside (all in 1 room) and a few weights outside. Today's version is huge with everything you can think of inside. Anyone can join the gym today or back then. Just remember: Unless your a Meathead, your going to feel very self-conscious. When I was in college, I went to visit family in California over SB. I was able to obtain a pass for the week at Gold's Gym. Now, I was a pretty damn strong 20-year old but I was lifting baby weights compared to everyone else. I remember grabbing the 110's to do Dumbbell Press on my two heavy sets to only realize there were guys warming up with those. I didn't see anyone famous lifting until the last day I was there on Friday. Lou was lifting with two other guys and I really wanted to go up and say I was a big fan but ultimately decided against because I did not want to bother him during a workout. He was still putting up some damn impressive weights and this was 1998.

The Gold's Gym that is in Venice now is not the same Gold's Gym in the movie. The location of the gym in the movie is now a house. The Gold's Gym sign in front can still be faintly seen on the house.

Yeah, there is a Gold's Gym in Venice Beach, CA, but it isn't the original. I'm surprised they didn't do more to keep the original location for historical interest.

The outdoor weight pit at Venice Beach is part of the public parks facilities, or something like that. It's not affiliated with Gold's. But it was also around as far back as the fifties, and Arnold and his contemporaries often trained there at the time of Pumping Iron.
