How did this film lose money?

One of the finest Disney films ever made. It had a great story, great songs and a lot of funny moments. It also had that Disney heart that does not exist anymore. I cannot believe it was not a hit. I guess Star Wars blew away most films that year.

I'm sure with dvd sales it has eventually turned a profit. From what I've seen in documentaries, film historians said audiences prefered darker, more realistic movies and Disney movies were considered "corny" and "uncool".

STAR WARS was released in the Summer of 1977. By the time this film was released "Star Wars" was no longer in released. ( It was pulled from theaters in Early December and later re-issued in the Summer of 1978). The film that took most of the box office dollars when "Pete's Dragon" was released was "Close Encounters".

"Pet's Dragon" was not bomb. It did not lose money. It made some money! Not tons but some. The film does have a loyal audience and the film is now on a 3rd generation of fans!

Pete's Dragon has always been one of my favorite movies.

Rose, please say you didn't! Please say you didn't!!

I never really understand the fascination of "realistic" movies.

Realistic movies can be good, but sometimes there's a time when you need a movie that is beyond the realm of reality.

Didn't lose money. According to IMDB it cost 10mill and grossed 30mill in it's run.

It lost money because it's terrible

reply

agreed - this is one of the most dreadful, un-fun movies i've ever had to sit through. even my kids thought it was dull and hated the songs.

reply

Except it didn't lose money and it's not terrible.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and the concept of having a huge friend. Children will also enjoy it!

It made a little money but is considered a failure. Disney tried to mimic Mary Poppins and failed horribly. It has 50% rating which means its crap.

MP was just an empty-headed sappy, manipulative Song of the South knockoff to begin with.

It has 50% rating which means its crap.

No, it means 50% of the people liked it and 50% did not. The ones who liked it were right then and they are right now, whether or not you disagree with them.
